About Recovery Assistant for iPhone and iPad

If your device has an issue while starting up or experiences crashes, your device may start Recovery Assistant. Recovery Assistant downloads a software package to resolve startup issues.

If Recovery Assistant appears, click Continue to start the recovery process. The recovery process may take several minutes to complete.

The recovery process requires a Wi-Fi connection.*

After the recovery process completes, restart your device. If the startup issue continues, make sure your device is on the latest version of iOS or iPadOS. If the issue persists, get service.

If you need to manually start Recovery Assistant:

  1. Connect your device to a computer or power source.

  2. Power the device off.

  3. Press and hold the side button until you see the connect to computer screen, then release the side button.

  4. Double press the side button.

  5. Click Continue.

  6. Review the information and choose to send or not send data to Apple.

To help diagnose the problem, you can choose to share diagnostic and log files from this device with Apple. Sharing diagnostic and log files will include data from before the issue occurred and could contain sensitive or personal information, such as your name, device serial number, or file names. Sharing this data is optional.

The following data gets collected during the recovery process:

  • Device metadata (model, software version, disk size, free space)

  • System stability logs

  • Recent system activity logs

Apple will use the data you send to troubleshoot device issues and won't share the data with any other company. Apple will treat this data in accordance with its privacy policy at all times.

*Captive networks and networks that require 802.1X authentication aren't supported.
