Save storage space when syncing on Mac
You can save storage space when syncing large music or video files. Saving storage can also help if you’re having problems syncing music or videos on Mac.
For more information, see Intro to syncing your Mac and your devices.
Connect your device to your Mac.
You can connect your device using a USB or USB-C cable or a Wi-Fi connection. See Sync content between your Mac and iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch over Wi-Fi.
Click
in the Dock to open a Finder window, then select the device in the Finder sidebar.
If you connect your device to your Mac using a USB cable and don’t see the device in the Finder sidebar, see the Apple Support article If your computer doesn’t recognize your iPhone or iPad.
In the row near the top, click General, then do any of the following.
Sync standard definition videos only: Select “Prefer standard definition videos.” Standard definition videos take up less storage than larger, high-definition videos.
Sync only checked [songs] or [videos]: Sync only the songs or videos that you selected in Music, Movies, or TV Shows. This option only appears when you have “Songs list checkboxes” selected in General settings in Apple Music or “Checkboxes in library” selected in General settings in the Apple TV app.
Convert music to a lower bit rate: Select “Convert higher bit rate songs to,” then choose a bit rate from the pop-up menu. This creates a smaller file and saves storage space on your device. The original music remains in your library on your Mac.
You can also save storage by turning off Automatic Syncing (if it’s turned on) and manually syncing select content instead. See Sync content between your Mac and iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Click Apply.
Before disconnecting your device from your Mac, click in the Finder sidebar.
