Manage content tokens in Apple Business Essentials
External device management services assign content to devices or users by communicating with Apple Business Essentials. For your service to link and communicate, a content token is required. Contact your developer for specific information about installing the token in your service.
Content tokens expire annually, so make note of your token’s renewal date when you link a content token. To avoid interruption of service, create a Managed Apple Account specifically to download and manage your content tokens. This helps prevent service interruptions by events like password policies requiring an update of the user’s password, which invalidates the token.
Important: If your organization has a monthly subscription to Apple Business Essentials, Apple Business Essentials uses the content token for your primary location to assign app licenses. Another device management service can’t use that content token. If your organization uploaded the content token to a device management service prior to beginning a monthly subscription to Apple Business Essentials, you need to remove it to avoid inconsistencies in app license inventory and app assignment failures.
Using content tokens with external device management services
In Apple Business Essentials, another device management service can use content tokens that represent locations other than the primary location. To use a token with an external device management service:
In Apple Business Essentials, sign in with a user who has the role of Administrator.
Create an additional location if one doesn’t already exist. See Configure locations.
Transfer any licenses you want to use in the new location. See Transfer licenses to another location.
