General settings in the Apple TV app on a TV or living room device include settings for languages, subtitles, default video format, and troubleshooting.

Go to the Apple TV app
on your TV or living room device.Open the sidebar, then select Settings.
Adjust any of the General settings listed below.
Option
Description
Language
Select to change the display language.
Audio Language
Select to choose another audio language.
Subtitle Language
Select to change the language for subtitles and captions.
Automatic Subtitles
Turn on Show for Different Languages to activate subtitles in a language other than the display language.
Turn on Show When Muted to activate subtitles when audio is muted.
Turn on Show on Skip Back to activate subtitles when you skip backward for 10–30 seconds.
Limit Purchases and Rentals to SD
Limit Playback to SD
If you have a slow internet connection or want to use less data, you can turn on either of these settings to limit all purchases and rentals or playback to the standard-definition (SD) format in the Apple TV app.
If you want better quality high-definition (HD) videos, turn these settings off.
Reset Apple TV
Select Reset if you’re having problems and the Apple TV app still doesn’t respond after restarting.
Resetting the Apple TV app restores it to original settings and erases all data including your accounts and configuration, personal information, TV shows, and movies.
Video Troubleshooting
Select Start, then follow the onscreen instructions to test your network connection and help you resolve any issues if you’re having problems playing video.
