View analytics in News Publisher
Users with a member role of Administrator, Editor in Chief, Editor, or Sales can view analytics data for channels and articles online and receive high-level analytics information via email. Information includes unique viewers, total views, average active time, article shares, likes, and new follows.
View analytics online for a single channel
Go to icloud.com, sign in, then click News Publisher.
Click Analytics to see an overview of the data.
To see details, click a metric in the sidebar, then do one of the following:
View data point details: Move the pointer over the chart.
View data from a different time period: Click the relevant pop-up menu, then choose an option.
View data for a specific article: Click the article title below the chart.
Filter data by territory, sponsored, content type, user type, and app (News or Stocks): Click Filter, choose options, then click Apply.
Split the chart by territory, sponsored, content type, user type, share method, or app (News or Stocks): Click Split, choose an option, then click Apply.
Note: Not all channels appear in the Stocks app. Some options for filtering and splitting data are only available for select channels.
View analytics online for multiple channels
Users with the Administrator, Editor in Chief, Editor, or Sales role in two or more channels can view analytics for multiple channels.
Go to icloud.com, sign in, then click News Publisher.
Click the channel name in the sidebar, choose All Channels from the drop-down menu, then click Analytics to see an overview of the data.
Click Channels, choose up to 50 channels, then click Apply.
The widgets in the dashboard update based on your channel selections.
To see details, click a metric in the sidebar, then do one of the following:
View data point details: Move the pointer over the chart.
View data from a different time period: Click the relevant pop-up menu, then choose an option.
Filter data by territory, content type, and user type: Click Filter, choose options, then click Apply.
Split the chart by territory or channel: Click Split, choose an option, then click Apply.
Note: You can’t split by channel when more than 10 channels are selected.
View data for a specific channel: Click the channel name below the chart.
View data for a specific article: Click the article title below the chart.
See data about notifications and featured and trending articles
At the bottom of a chart on most metrics pages for a channel or article, a dot appears for each day when one or more of these things occurred:
One or more notifications were sent about the channel’s articles.
An article was featured by Apple.
An article appeared in Trending Stories.
If, for example, an article’s unique viewers increased on a day when multiple notifications were sent and the article was featured in Top Stories, you can reasonably conclude that the notifications and the feature affected the number of unique viewers.
To see data about notifications and featured and trending articles, click a dot on the chart, then click the popover to view the associated metric.
Article-level CSV reports include a metric called “Featured by Apple.” If the article was featured by Apple in any way—it appeared in Top Stories or Breaking News, for example—the word yes appears in the report’s Featured by Apple column.
More detailed information about when an individual article was featured, and its effect on metrics, can be found on the article’s analytics page.
Note: Notifications are available only for select channels.
Download an analytics report from a chart or top articles table
Go to icloud.com, sign in, then click News Publisher.
Click Analytics, then choose a metric.
You can download data from the chart or from the table of top articles found below the chart.
To download the data, click . These files can be opened with spreadsheet applications such as Numbers from Apple, and Microsoft Excel.
Get recurring analytics reports via email
Users with the Administrator or Editor in Chief role for a channel can set up recurring reports delivered via email.
Go to icloud.com, sign in, then click News Publisher.
Click Analytics, click Recurring Reports in the sidebar, then specify filtering options for the data:
Time Zone: Click the pop-up menu, then choose a time zone.
Week Starts On: Click the pop-up menu, then choose the day you want the week to start.
Member: Choose how often designated members receive reports (daily, weekly, or monthly).
Click Save.
When a report is ready, designated members receive an email that includes the high-level analytics data as well as a link to the full channel and article data report, top articles report, media report, and, for select channels, a notifications report. You can open these CSV reports with spreadsheet applications such as Numbers from Apple, and Microsoft Excel.
Get a custom analytics report for a single channel
Users with the Administrator, Editor in Chief, Editor, or Sales role can create a custom analytics report that includes analytics data for a specific time period.
Go to icloud.com, sign in, then click News Publisher.
Click Analytics, then click Custom Reports.
Click Create Custom Report, then choose one of the following reports from the Report Type menu:
All Types: This report can include all of the below, depending on the available metrics.
Article Detail: This report contains metrics for individual articles; with it you can assess the performance of individual articles.
Articles Published: This report details the number of articles you published to your channel, and to each section in your channel.
Channel Summary: This report contains aggregated metrics for all articles in your channel; with it you can assess the channel’s overall performance in Apple News.
Discovery Source: This report details the number of article views that came from each location—from the Today feed, topic feeds, and your channel feed, for example.
Media: This report contains media metrics for individual articles; with it you can determine the degree to which users interacted with video in the articles.
Notifications: This report contains metrics for notifications you’ve sent to Apple News users—with it you can see the number of unique article viewers resulting from each notification.
Notifications reports are available only for select channels.
Top Articles: This report contains metrics for the top articles from your channel based on total views; with it you can see the performance of your top articles. If your channel offers stories that require a subscription to read, click the drop-down menu to choose a report that contains the top 100 articles for all content, free content, or subscription content.
Note: The reports reflect an article’s free/paid status at the time the report is generated. If you later change an article’s status—from free to paid, for example—you must generate a new report to reflect that change.
Specify these data options:
Time Zone: Click the drop-down menu, then choose a time zone.
Territory: Click the drop-down menu, then choose a territory.
Range: Choose an option, or use the calendars to select continuous days.
The start date for the range must be within the last 3 years. The maximum range for All Types, Article Detail, and Media is 31 days. Articles Published, Channel Summary, Notifications, and Top Articles have a maximum range of 366 days.
You can choose to be notified by email when the report is ready.
Click Create.
When a report is ready, a link to it appears in the report archive at the bottom of the page.
Note: If a report fails to generate, its row is highlighted in red and Trash and Refresh buttons appear under Download.
Click the links in the archive to download reports.
You can open these CSV reports with spreadsheet applications such as Numbers from Apple, and Microsoft Excel.
Get a custom analytics report for multiple channels
Users with the Administrator, Editor in Chief, Editor, or Sales role in two or more channels can create a custom analytics report for multiple channels. A report for multiple channels offers analytics data for a specific time period.
Go to icloud.com, sign in, then click News Publisher.
Click the channel name, then choose All Channels from the drop-down menu.
Click Analytics, then click Custom Reports.
Click Create Custom Report, click the Channels menu, select some channels (you can select up to 50 channels), then click Apply.
Choose the report you want from the Report Type menu:
Channels Roll Up: This report contains aggregated data for each day for the selected channels where your role is Administrator, Editor in Chief, Editor, or Sales.
Channels Summary: This report contains metrics for articles in the selected channels where your role is Administrator, Editor in Chief, Editor, or Sales.
Top Articles: This report contains metrics for the top articles across the selected channels where your role is Administrator, Editor in Chief, Editor, or Sales. If any of the selected channels offer stories that require a subscription to read, click the drop-down menu to choose a report that contains the top 100 articles for all content, free content, or subscription content.
Note: The reports reflect an article’s free/paid status at the time the report is generated. If you later change an article’s status—from free to paid, for example—you must generate a new report to reflect that change.
Specify these data options:
