If you see an error when you update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod

If you see an error code or alert while updating or restoring your device, learn what to do.

Update your Mac or PC

Update your Mac. If you're using a PC, make sure that you have the latest version of the Apple Devices app or iTunes.

Plug your device directly into your computer

Plug your iPhone, iPad, or iPod directly into your computer's USB port. Don't plug it into an attached keyboard or USB hub.

Make sure you unlock your device. If prompted, trust your device.

If you still see an error alert, try a different Apple USB cable. You can also switch to a different USB port on your computer.

Restart your computer and your device

  1. Turn off your computer.

Check your computer’s security software

You might need to update, change, or uninstall software that's interfering with your computer's connection. This includes the Apple Devices app or iTunes.
