Public Site Manager Glossary

administrator

A user who has administrative authority for networks, servers, databases, or other information technology assets. Administrators can manage, create, edit, and customize many aspects of an iTunes U Public Site Manager site. Administrators can add, hide, and delete content, create and customize pages, then publish content live for users in the iTunes U catalog. Administrators can also define one or more additional administrators and contributors to help create, edit, and manage a site and content. Compare contributor.

affiliated instructor

An instructor at a K12 school district, college, or university whose institution has a site in the iTunes U catalog, and who were added as a contributor to the site by the iTunes U Public Site Manager administrator. Affiliated instructors can access iTunes U to create, design, and distribute public or private courses. iTunes U provides unlimited storage space for affiliated instructors. All Courses feature box

A box in your provider page containing links to all the courses added to your site.

Apple ID

A unique user name that allows you to sign in with administrative or contributor access to your site. All access is integrated with an Apple ID. If you do not have an Apple ID, see My Apple ID to create a new Apple ID.

box

A general term for any of the following user interface elements: What’s New box, custom feature box, featured box, and so on.

categories list

An area in your provider page containing links to category pages. iTunes U Public Site Manager automatically populates the categories list with predefined categories, based on data from your courses.

category page

A page that displays groupings of courses associated with a particular predefined category. Instructors can assign predefined categories, allowing content to be displayed within category pages and therefore providing users a subject-based navigation method for discovering content.

clean

A label used to identify an edited version of an explicit recording. Compare explicit.

configurable pages

Pages (configurable provider page) in iTunes U Public Site Manager used to configure, edit, and customize page design and layout.

contributor

A user who has contributor access to an iTunes U Public Site Manager site. Contributor access is limited to the Courses view; where the contributor can add and manage courses they own in iTunes U. More than one contributor can sign in at the same time to add and edit content in an iTunes U Public Site Manager site. Compare administrator.

course

A series of educational lectures, lessons, interviews, and so on, in a particular subject. Courses consist of info (including an overview, outline, and instructor profile), posts (including assignments with homework and grading), materials (for example, audio and video), and a grade book (private courses only). Instructors can create and prepare content for a course by recording lectures, developing assignments, creating videos and podcasts, uploading Keynote presentations or other documents and handouts, and much more.

Instructors can use iTunes U to create both public courses and private courses. See also public course and private course.

download

To transfer files from one computer or system to another.

For your iTunes U courses, students and users can download individual materials or subscribe so supported materials are automatically downloaded as they become available.

enclosure

A value in reports to indicate the number of times a user subscribes to a course and an individual material (audio, video, PDF) is downloaded as it becomes available as part of a subscription.

enrollment code

A unique code associated with a specific iTunes U private course. Instructors can share a course enrollment code with students, and the students can then request access to the course by entering the course enrollment code in iTunes U on iOS (iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch).

Enroll codes are case-insensitive and dashes are not required.

EPUB file

An electronic publication file. A digital version of a printed publication, created according to the EPUB book format. The EPUB book format is a free, open ebook standard developed and maintained by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF), a nonprofit standards organization. You can use Pages to export your documents in EPUB book format for reading with Apple Books on iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. See Use advanced book creation options in Pages.

explicit

A label issued by media producers that alerts consumers to content that might be inappropriate for children. Compare clean.

iOS software

The mobile operating system software used by iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

item

See materials.

iTunes ID

A canonical identifier for a course in your site. In iTunes U Public Site Manager, the last set of numbers in a course URL link.

iTunes Store

An online store where you can purchase or rent music, movies, and TV shows. The content you and others see in the iTunes Store can vary by the country or region specified by each individual user as their default country.

iTunes U

iTunes U is an iPad and web app for instructors who want to create, edit, design, distribute, and teach all-digital courses.

iTunes U catalog

A listing of iTunes U courses in the iTunes U app (for example, lectures, language lessons, audiobooks). When you add and publish courses, the published content appears in the iTunes U catalog.

Languages list

An area in your provider page containing links to language pages. The Languages list appears when you add it to your provider page and your site contains courses in more than one language.

library

Refers to the collection of courses added to the iTunes U app.

list

A general term for any of the following user interface elements: Categories list, Languages list, and so on.

Managed Apple ID

Like a personal Apple ID, you can use a Managed Apple ID to sign in to a personal device, sign in to a shared device, or to access Apple services including iCloud, iTunes U, and Apple School Manager. Unlike personal Apple IDs, Managed Apple IDs are owned and controlled by a school or district. The institution can reset passwords, limit purchasing and communications, and set up role-based administration. See Apple School Manager Help.

materials

A piece of content (for example, a lecture) an instructor adds to a course as a media file (audio, video, web, app, book, document, and so on). Instructors can add materials using files on their computer, web links, or existing iTunes Store, Apple Books, and App Store links. It is best to use URLs to reference materials when possible.

metadata

Supplemental information about a media file type. For example, an audio file contains audio information. The name of the person that created the file, the length of the file, the title of the file, description, and so on, are all examples of metadata a file might contain.

page path

A user interface element within an iTunes U Public Site Manager page that allows the user to see where the current page is in relation to the site’s top-level, or main page. The path controls the navigation between pages. You can configure page names and affect what appears in the page path.

private course

An iTunes U course available only to students invited by the instructor (for unaffiliated instructors, no more than 50 students per course). By default, all courses created in iTunes U are private. To make a course public, an affiliated instructor must submit a request to their institution’s iTunes U Public Site Manager administrator and the administrator must add the course to the institution’s iTunes U site. provider

A university, museum, public media organization, or other cultural institution creating, designing, managing, and providing content for an iTunes U Public Site Manager site.

provider page

A page that the public uses to access courses, category pages, See All pages, and materials in your site. Your top-level, or main page used to welcome your users to your site.

public course

An iTunes U course available to all users. By default, all courses created in iTunes U are private. To make a course public, an affiliated instructor must submit a request to their institution’s iTunes U Public Site Manager administrator and the administrator must add the course to the institution’s iTunes U site. Compare private course.

RSS feed

A standardized web feed format used to publish frequently updated content. For performance and usability, limit the number of items in a feed. Apple recommends an upper limit of 50 items.

See All page

A page displaying all the courses and materials featured in the specific feature box.

site

A set of interconnected pages, including a main provider page, prepared and maintained as a collection of information by a person, group, or organization. For iTunes U Public Site Manager, a set of pages and associated content that make up a provider’s presence in the iTunes U catalog.

Top Content feature box

A box in your provider page containing links to the top course downloads by subscription for your site. iTunes U Public Site Manager begins collecting download data as soon as your site is active. About a half a day after the first course is download from your site, iTunes U Public Site Manager has enough data to determine the most downloaded courses and display the top courses in the Top Content feature box. The iTunes U Public Site Manager popularity is based on your user’s download activity and the top courses are specific to your user’s iTunes Store locale.

unaffiliated instructor

An instructor not officially affiliated with an iTunes U verified K12 school district, college, or university with an iTunes U Public Site Manager site. Unaffiliated instructors can access iTunes U to create, design, and distribute up to 12 private courses, with no more than 50 students per course. iTunes U restricts available storage space for unaffiliated instructors to 20 GB. URL list

An area in your provider page containing hypertext links to additional content, supporting documents, and content considered external to the primary content. You can link to content both internal and external to your site.

visitor

A unique user to your site. iTunes U Public Site Manager tracks visitor on a per day basis.
