Subscribe and listen to podcasts

Browse free audio episodes and shows about topics that range from comedy and science to news and politics in the Podcasts app on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Apple TV, in iTunes on a Mac or PC, or on your HomePod.

 

Find and subscribe

You can browse to find shows that are new and popular, or search to find podcasts by title or topic. 

  • On your iOS device, open the Podcasts app, then tap  Browse at the bottom of the screen to browse. To search, tap  Search at the bottom of the screen, then enter the title of a podcast or a topic.
  • In iTunes on a Mac or PC, choose  Podcasts from the menu in the upper-left corner, then click Store to browse. To search, enter the title of a podcast or a topic in the search field in the upper-right corner of iTunes.
  • On your Apple TV, open the Podcasts app, then swipe right on your Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote and select Featured or Top Charts to browse. To search, select Search, then search for the title of a podcast or a topic.

In the Podcasts app, the Featured and Top Charts tabs feature shows that are new and popular. The Providers tab features shows from specific companies, and in All Categories, you can browse by topics such as News & Politics, Comedy, Technology, and more.

Subscribe

On your iOS device, when you find a show that you want to subscribe to, tap it to go to the show's info page, then tap . After you subscribe, new episodes automatically download1 for free as they become available.

In iTunes, go to the show's info page, then click Subscribe.

On your Apple TV, go to the show's info page, then select Subscribe at the top of the episode list.

Apple Podcasts might pause your subscription if you stop listening to a show. The shows and downloaded episodes stay in your library, but new episodes might not be updated. To continue getting new episodes, subscribe again.

1 To turn off automatic downloads on your iOS device, go to Settings > Podcasts > Download Episodes and choose Off. In iTunes, click the show in the middle column, click  to the right of the show's title, then choose Off in the Download Episodes menu. Episodes don't download to your Apple TV.

Listen to shows

You can stream and download shows at home or on the go on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch2, Mac, or PC. You can also stream podcasts on your Apple TV or HomePod. Or you can ask Siri to start playing a podcast by its title. Learn more about using Siri on your iOS device, Mac, Apple TV, or HomePod.

If you start listening to an episode in the Podcasts app on one Apple device, you can finish the episode on another. Learn more about syncing podcasts.

2 To stream shows using cellular data on your iOS device, make sure Cellular Data is turned on in Settings > Cellular > Podcasts.

Play all new episodes for one show

On your iOS device, open the Podcasts app, then tap  Listen Now at the bottom of the screen. Tap the show that you want to listen to, then tap  Play. After the latest episode finishes, any unplayed episodes of that show in your Library automatically play next.

In iTunes on a Mac or PC, choose  Podcasts from the menu in the upper-left corner, then click Library. To play all unheard episodes of a show, double-click the show that you want to listen to in the middle column.

On your Apple TV, open the Podcasts app, then select Library. Select the show that you want to listen to, then select the latest unplayed episode. After the latest episode finishes, any unplayed episodes of that show in your Library automatically play next.

Queue episodes from multiple shows

On your iOS device:

  1. Open the Podcasts app.
  2. While listening to an episode, find the episode that you want to listen to next.
  3. Tap  on the episode's info page, or use 3D Touch on the name of the episode.
  4. Tap Play Next to add it to your Up Next queue. 

If you want to add additional episodes to your Up Next queue, follow the steps, but tap Play Later. The episode adds to the bottom of your queue.

You can also start listening to an episode in the Podcasts app on one Apple device, and finish the episode on another. Learn more about syncing podcasts.

Customize playback settings

In the Podcasts app on your iOS device, tap or swipe up on the player at the bottom of the screen to open the Now Playing screen.

From the Now Playing screen, you can:

  • Tap  or  to jump back or forward 15 seconds.
  • Tap  to change the playback speed. You can change your playback speed to 1 1/2x (slightly faster), 2x (fast), 1/2x (slightly slower), and back to 1x (normal speed).
  • Tap  to use AirPlay to stream the episode to another device.

 

Swipe up to find additional features:

  • Tap , then choose when you want playback to end.
  • Tap Show to the right of Episode Notes to read a description of the episode.
  • And if you have episodes in your Up Next queue, you'll see them listed under Up Next.
     

In iTunes on a Mac or PC, choose  Podcasts from the menu in the upper-left corner, then click Library. Click  in the upper-right corner of the iTunes window to change playback settings.

On your Apple TV, open the Podcasts app, then select Library. Choose the show that you want to change the settings for, then scroll to the bottom of the unplayed list and select Podcast Settings.

 

Download episodes to listen to offline

If you want to listen to an episode while you're not connected to Wi-Fi or the Internet, you can download it.

On your iOS device, tap  on the episode's info page. 

In iTunes on a Mac or PC, click  to the right of a specific episode. 

You can only stream episodes on your Apple TV.

Download podcasts using cellular data

On your iOS device, go to Settings > Podcasts on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and turn off "Only Download on Wi-Fi." The maximum download size is 100 MB per episode.

Unsubscribe or delete

Episodes automatically delete 24 hours after they're played. You can unsubscribe from podcasts or delete individual episodes.

Unsubscribe

On your iOS device, find the show that you want to unsubscribe from, tap  , then tap Unsubscribe. No new episodes will download to your device.

Delete a specific episode

Go to your Library, then find the show with the episode that you want to delete. Swipe left on the episode, then tap Delete.

 

When you unsubscribe from a show, episodes in your Library or those that you downloaded to your device to listen to offline don't delete. If you want to unsubscribe and delete all episodes from your Library and device, tap  , then tap "Delete from Library."

You won't see the option to unsubscribe if you stopped listening to a show.

In iTunes on a Mac or PC:

  • To unsubscribe, click  to the right of the show's title, then choose Unsubscribe Podcast.
  • To delete a specific episode, right-click or Control-click on the episode, then choose "Delete from Library."

On your Apple TV

To unsubscribe, scroll the bottom of the unplayed episodes list, then select Podcast Settings. Under Show, select Subscribed to unsubscribe.
