Use Restrictions on your Apple TV

You can use Restrictions, also known as parental controls, to block or limit certain features and services on your Apple TV.

Before you begin

Make sure you've got the latest software for your Apple TV.

Turn on Restrictions

Turn on Restrictions to limit access to certain features or content on your Apple TV:

  1. From the main menu, go to Settings > General > Restrictions.
  2. Select Restrictions to turn it on.
  3. When asked, make a four-digit passcode.
  4. Enter the four digits again to confirm, then select OK.

Adjust the Restrictions for your Apple TV (4th generation)

In some cases, you can customize your Restrictions. The options can vary. Here are some selections you will see in Settings > General > Restrictions:

  • Allow: Select this when you don't want to password-protect or restrict a certain app or feature.
  • Restrict: Choose this restriction to require a four-digit passcode for purchases, rentals, or app usage.
  • Block or No: Choose these restrictions to block content or features.
  • Show or Yes: Choose this when you don't want to restrict the app or feature.
  • Hide: Select this to hide the app or feature.

Restrict specific features or content

Here are examples of what you can restrict and what your options are for each:

  • Purchases, rentals, or in-app purchases from the iTunes Store: Select Allow, Restrict, or Block.
  • Music and Podcasts: Select Clean to filter out Explicit content, or Explicit to filter nothing.
  • Movies, TV Shows, and Apps: Select your locale and filter or block content based on film or age ratings.
  • Siri Explicit Language: Select Hide to filter mature language, or Show to filter nothing.
  • Multiplayer Games and Adding Friends in Game Center: Select Yes or No.
  • AirPlay Settings and Location Services: Select Allow or Restrict.

You can also customize your iTunes Store and App Store password preferences.

Adjust the Restrictions for your Apple TV (2nd generation or 3rd generation)

There are several ways to restrict content or features on your Apple TV. The options can vary. Here are some selections that you will find in Settings > General > Restrictions:

  • Hide: Select this restriction to hide apps from the main menu.
  • Ask: Choose this restriction to require a four-digit passcode for purchases, rentals, or app usage.
  • Show or Allow: If you don't want to password-protect or restrict a certain app or feature, you can select Show or Allow.

Restrict specific features or content

Here are examples of what you can restrict and what your options are for each:

  • Purchases & Rentals: Select Allow, Hide*, or Ask.
  • Movies and shows: Select your locale and filter or block content based on ratings.
  • Explicit music or podcasts: Select Allow or Ask.
  • Airplay Settings: Select Allow, Hide, or Ask.
  • Conference Room Display settings: Select Allow, Hide, or Ask.
  • Apps: From the main menu, go to Settings > Main Menu. Pick the app that you want to restrict and select Hide or Ask.

You can also customize your iTunes Store and App Store password preferences.

*If you select Hide, your Movies and TV Shows won't appear in the Main Menu and won't be available to play.
