Manage notifications from Calendar on Mac
You can set notifications for events. Calendar notifications appear in the top-right corner of the screen. You can click them to get directions, join meetings, or snooze them. You can receive notifications from all calendars or only certain ones. You can also change how the notifications appear or turn them off altogether.
Set alerts for an event
You can be notified of an upcoming calendar event by setting one or more alerts. An alert can display a notification on your screen, send an email, or open a file.
Go to the Calendar app
on your Mac.
Double-click or force click an event to view event details, then click the event’s time.
Click the Alert pop-up menu, then do any of the following:
Choose a time or day.
Choose Time to Leave. (This option applies only if you added a location. For information about how time to leave is calculated, see Add a location.)
To customize the alert, click the Alert pop-up menu, choose Custom, then choose any of the following:
Message with sound: Displays a notification on the screen and makes a sound.
Email: Sends you an email.
Open file: Opens the file you choose.
To add another alert, place the pointer over the Alert pop-up menu, then click
.
You can set only one alert for Exchange events.
Tip: By default, events you create don’t have alerts associated with them. You can change alert settings, which are applied to new and existing events that you haven’t set an alert for. See Change Alerts settings.
Respond to event notifications
On your Mac, move the pointer over an event notification, then do any of the following:
Dismiss the notification: Click
.
Temporarily dismiss the notification: Click Options, then choose Snooze (Automatic) or choose a snooze duration.
Join an online meeting: Click Options, then choose Join.
Get directions to the event location: Click Options, then choose Directions.

Mute notifications from Calendar: Click
, click
, then choose an option.
If you choose Snooze (Automatic), the notification reappears in 9 minutes or at the start of the event, whichever is sooner. If you choose Snooze (Automatic) after the start time, it reappears in 9 minutes.
Manage notifications per calendar
Go to the Calendar app
on your Mac.
Control-click the name of the calendar in the calendar list, then choose Get Info.
If you don’t see the calendar list on the left, choose View > Show Calendar List.
Select or deselect “Ignore alerts,” then click OK.
Manage other notifications from Calendar
Go to the Calendar app
on your Mac.
Choose Calendar > Settings, then click Alerts.
Select or deselect any of the following checkboxes:
Time to Leave: Receive notifications based on your location and the location of upcoming events.
Show shared calendar messages in Notification Center: See shared calendar messages in Notification Center
Show invitation messages in Notification Center: See invitation messages in Notification Center.
Turn Calendar notifications on or off
Go to the System Settings app
on your Mac.
Click Notifications
in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
Go to Application Notifications, click Calendar, then turn Allow Notifications on or off.
Note: To display notifications from Calendar when a Focus is on, you must allow the notifications to appear. See Set up a Focus.
Change Calendar notification options
You can change the Calendar notification alert style and choose options for time-sensitive alerts, add a badge to the app icon, play a sound for the notification, and more.
Go to the System Settings app
on your Mac.
Click Notifications
in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
Go to Application Notifications, click Calendar, then do any of the following:
Click the Calendar alert style you prefer.
Turn additional options on or off.
Use the pop-up menus to choose options for notification previews and grouping.
