Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

  1. Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove one crosshead screw from the battery connector. Set aside the screw.

  2. Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove 11 battery adhesive strips.

    • Warning: Don’t scrape or puncture the battery with the tweezers.

    • Grasp the battery adhesive tab and gently peel it away from the battery.

    • Twist the tab around the tweezers and pull up 1 inch until you see white adhesive strip on the tweezers.

    • Keep the tweezers close and parallel to the battery. Then pull the tweezers toward the edge of the enclosure and continue to twist and pull the adhesive until you’ve removed the entire strip.

      • Caution: Don’t pull the adhesive strip against parts or screws. Avoid touching the logic board with tweezers or the adhesive strip.

    • Repeat the process to remove the remaining 10 battery adhesive strips.

    • Important

      • If the battery adhesive tab or strip breaks off and you can still see it, attempt to retrieve it with the tweezers. Wrap the tab or strip around the tweezers and continue to twist and pull the adhesive until you've removed the entire strip.

      • If a battery adhesive strip breaks and can't be retrieved, attempt to remove the battery by inserting the flat end of the black stick only into one of the insertion points as shown. Ensure that the black stick is inserted into a point where the battery strip has been fully removed.

    • Warning: If the battery is dented, punctured, or otherwise damaged, stop the repair. Don't remove the battery from the iPad. You can find a service option at support.apple.com/repair.

  3. Gently wiggle the battery and remove the battery from the enclosure.

Reassembly

Warning

Inspect the enclosure for loose or extra screws and small parts, which may damage the battery and cause safety issues.

  1. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to remove all residual adhesive from the enclosure underneath the battery.

    • Caution: Don't use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes on any flex cables adhered to the enclosure.

  2. Peel the clear release liner off the underside of the replacement battery.

    • Caution: Don’t remove the protective cover from the top of the battery yet.

  3. Hold the battery over the enclosure with the protective cover faceup. Align the edge of the battery with the logic board and speaker.

  4. Slide the battery connector into the logic board as you lower the battery into the enclosure.

  5. Use the black torque driver and JCIS bit to install one new crosshead screw (452-06579) into the battery connector.

  6. Move the adhesive activation roller back and forth over a battery adhesive strip 10 times to adhere the battery to the enclosure. Repeat the process for all the remaining battery adhesive strips.

    • Caution: Don't roll the adhesive activation roller over the section shown.

  7. Hold the edges of the protective cover. Pull the release tabs on the protective cover to remove it from the battery. Remove the blue liner.
