Crop, extend, reframe, and straighten photos and videos on Mac
You can crop a photo or video to improve its composition or eliminate unwanted parts of the image. You can crop it to a preset or custom aspect ratio, or you can constrain the photo or video to its original aspect ratio. You can also straighten photos and videos that were taken at an angle. With Apple Intelligence, you can extend the background of a photo or adjust its perspective.

Important: Cropping a photo changes its appearance everywhere in Photos, including in albums, slideshows, and projects. To edit a photo without changing it everywhere, first duplicate the photo and then edit the duplicate.

Go to the Photos app
on your Mac.
Double-click the photo or video, then click Edit in the toolbar.
Do any of the following:
Crop or straighten automatically: Click Crop in the toolbar, then click Auto.
Crop manually: Click Crop in the toolbar, then drag the selection rectangle to enclose the area you want to keep in the photo.
Crop to specific proportions: Click Crop in the toolbar, then click the aspect ratio you want in the sidebar.
For example, for a square photo, choose Square. For printing the photo, choose one of the preset aspect ratios, such as 4:5. To resize a photo for use in a high-definition video, choose 16:9. Or choose Custom to enter a custom aspect ratio for a photo.
Extend the background of a photo: Click Tools in the toolbar, click Extend, then drag the selection rectangle to adjust the background ratio. You can also select an aspect ratio for the extended image. Click Extend to see the updated photo.
Flip the image: Click Crop in the toolbar, then click Flip to flip the image horizontally. Option-click to flip the image vertically.
Change the orientation of a photo: Click Crop in the toolbar, then choose a horizontal or vertical orientation.
Straighten the photo or video: Drag the Straighten, Vertical, and Horizontal sliders to adjust the angle of the photo. Or move the pointer outside of the selection rectangle, then click
to adjust the angle of the photo.
Change the perspective of a photo: Click Tools in the toolbar, click Reframe, then drag the photo or use the Rotate, Pan, Straighten, or Zoom slider to adjust the point of view. Click Reframe to see the updated photo.
Remove the current cropping or straightening changes: Click Reset.
When you’re finished making changes, do one of the following:
Save your changes: Click Done or Save Changes.
Stop cropping without saving your changes: Click Revert to Original or Revert.
