
Change Battery preferences on a Mac notebook
Use Battery System Preferences to set options that control your computer’s battery and energy use. How you set these options can help you extend the life of your battery.
Note: Some of the options may not be available, depending on your Mac.
To open these preferences, choose Apple menu
Option | Description |
---|---|
Show battery status in menu bar | Displays the battery’s charge level in the menu bar. |
“Turn display off after” slider | Drag the slider to set the amount of time your computer or display should wait before going to sleep while on battery power. |
Put hard disks to sleep when possible | Puts the hard drive to sleep whenever the computer is inactive. |
Slightly dim the display while on battery power | Reduces the brightness of the display while on battery power. |
Enable Power Nap while on battery power | Checks for email, calendar and other iCloud updates while sleeping on battery power. |
Automatic graphics switching | To extend the life of your battery, switches automatically between graphics modes. |
Optimise video streaming while on battery | While on battery power, plays high-dynamic-range (HDR) video in standard dynamic range (SDR), which requires less energy. See the Apple Support article Play HDR video on your Mac. |
Optimised battery charging | To reduce battery ageing, learns from your daily charging routine so your computer can wait to charge past 80% until you need to use it. |
Battery Health | Displays the condition and capacity of your computer battery, and provides an option to manage it.
