
Add a photo or video to a Freeform board on Mac
Add any photo or video in your photo library to your Freeform board. You can preview any images you add with a Quick Look window or a slideshow.
If Apple Intelligence* is turned on, you can also use Image Playground to create one-of-a-kind images in Freeform. See Create original images with Image Playground.

Add a photo or video
Go to the Freeform app
on your Mac.Click
, select Choose Photo or Video, select the photo or video from your photo library, then click Add to place it on your board.Tip: You can also drag a photo or video into your board from Photos, the Finder, or another app.
On your board, you can double-click a photo or video to preview it.
To insert a photo from your iPhone or iPad camera, see Insert a new photo.
You can also add premium images from the Content Hub to your board. Click
in the toolbar, click Browse Content Hub, click an object category in the top of the dialog, then click a premium image to add it to the board. Anyone can use premium Content Hub images, but you need to subscribe to Apple Creator Studio to remove their watermarks.
Format a photo or video
Go to the Freeform app
on your Mac.Open a board with a photo or video.
Select the photo or video to do any of the following:
Add a shadow: Control-click the photo or video, then choose Shadow.
Round an image’s corners: Control-click the photo or video, then choose Round Corners.
Use a mask: Choose Format > Image > Mask with Shape, then select an option.
Focus on the subject of the photo: If the background of a still image consists of areas that are mainly the same color, you can remove it. Click
, then choose Remove Background.Change the size, cropping, and more: Use the formatting tools in the table below.

Image Inspector button

Reset a photo to the source media's original size, replace it with a different photo, or remove the photo background.
If you're subscribed to Apple Creator Studio, you can also create a new image to replace the existing one or use Super Resolution.
Movie button

Reset a video to the source media’s original size or replace it with a different video.
Crop Mask button

Mask (crop) a photo to frame just the parts of the photo you want to be visible.
If you're subscribed to Apple Creator Studio, you can also use Auto Crop.
Preview button

Preview the full-size photo or video in a Quick Look window.
Auto Crop a photo
If you’re subscribed to Apple Creator Studio, you can use Auto Crop to intelligently generate cropping suggestions that improve image composition.

Go to the Freeform app
on your Mac.Open a board with an image, double-click the image to view the mask controls, then click Auto Crop to preview cropping suggestions.
Click a suggestion to update your image, then click Done.
Increase resolution with Super Resolution
If you’re subscribed to Apple Creator Studio, you can use Super Resolution to increase the resolution of photos, making them clearer.
Go to the Freeform app
on your Mac.Open a board with an image, click the image, then click
.Click Super Resolution.
Create new images with Image Generation
If you're subscribed to Apple Creator Studio, you can use Image Generation to intelligently create images.
This feature is not available in all countries and regions. To learn more, see the Apple Support article About Apple Creator Studio.

Go to the Freeform app
on your Mac.Open a board, then click
in the toolbar.Note: If this is your first time using Image Generation in Freeform, follow the onscreen instructions to share your age range with the app. Image Generation is not available for all ages, so a parent or guardian must enable this feature for children and teens in their family group. To learn more, see the Apple Support article How to set up Family Sharing on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Click Generate Image, then follow the onscreen instructions.
If you’re asked to send an image, select Allow Once or Always Allow. To reset this, choose Freeform > Intelligence Features > Reset Permissions.
Do one of the following:
Save the image: Click
, then choose where you want to save the image.Add the image to the board: Click the Insert button.
Important: Image Generation is subject to usage limitations. To check your usage status, choose Freeform > Intelligence Features > Show Usage Status.
View images as a slideshow
Go to the Freeform app
on your Mac.Open a board with a photo or video.
To open a Quick Look window with multiple images, select them, then press the Space bar.
To scroll through the items, click the arrows near the top left of the window or press the Left Arrow or Right Arrow key.
To view the items as a slideshow, click
, then click
. Press the Esc (Escape) key to exit the slideshow.
Continue to build your board by adding text, sticky notes, shapes, lines, diagrams, tables, links, and other files.
