Use Stolen Device Protection on your iPhone
Stolen Device Protection adds a layer of security to your iPhone, helping protect your accounts and personal information in case your device is ever stolen.
Face ID or biometric authentication: Some actions such as accessing stored passwords and erasing all content and settings require a biometric authentication with Face ID or Touch ID.
Security Delay: Some security actions such as changing your Apple Account password also require you to wait an hour and then perform an additional Face ID or Touch ID authentication.
See About Stolen Device Protection for iPhone for a full list of actions protected by biometric authentication and security delay.
IMPORTANT:
You can not turn off Find My when Stolen Device Protection is enabled.
You might have to wait a period of time before you can update certain security settings on a new device.
Note: If you think your iPhone has been stolen, see the Apple Support Article: If your iPhone or iPad was stolen to take steps to protect your device, Apple Account, and personal information.

Use the default setting
By default, the additional security measures of Stolen Device Protection are required only when your iPhone is away from familiar locations such as home or work. This means that when your device is at a familiar location, you’ll be able to make updates to your account and device with no delay. When you are away from those familiar locations, the additional security requirements will protect your account and device.
To turn on Stolen Device Protection you must have an iPhone with iOS 17.3 or later and set up or enable the following on your iPhone:
Two-factor authentication for your Apple Account
Go to Settings
, then tap Face ID & Passcode.Enter your device passcode.
Tap Stolen Device Protection, then turn Stolen Device Protection on.
Always require additional security measures
If you choose, you can set up Stolen Device Protection to always require these additional security measures, even when your iPhone is in a familiar location. This means your device and account information will have added protection wherever you are, including at home and at work.
When you choose this option, updates to certain security settings like updating your Apple Account password, signing out of your Apple Account, changing your passcode, and adding or removing FaceID or Touch ID always require a delay. Actions that require biometric authentication always require Face ID or Touch ID (with no passcode alternative).
Go to Settings
, then tap Face ID & Passcode.Enter your device passcode, then tap Stolen Device Protection.
Choose Always under Require Security Delay.
Turn Stolen Device Protection off
When Stolen Device Protection is off you will not have the added layer of security and you will be able to make updates to device and Apple Account settings without delay.
Go to Settings
, then tap Face ID & Passcode.Enter your device passcode.
Tap Stolen Device Protection, then turn Stolen Device Protection off.
