Before You Begin

 Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Tools

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)

  • Camera cap

  • Crosshead 44 mm half-moon bit

  • Crosshead 50 mm bit

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Nitrile or lint-free gloves

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Super screw 44 mm half-moon bit

  • Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf cm)

  • Trilobe 44 mm half-moon bit

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

 Caution

Avoid touching the camera lenses, grounding springs, or nearby parts.

Important

If you replace this part, it’s recommended to run Repair Assistant in order to finish the repair. Repair Assistant will be available on the device after you’ve completed all reassembly steps.

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

Important

Putting on the gloves and covering the camera lenses to prevent contamination of the camera lenses is recommended.

Complete back glass removal steps 1 through 4. Then continue to step 1.

  1. Use a torque driver and trilobe bit to remove five trilobe screws. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Remove the lower connector cowling and save it for reassembly.

    • Remove the middle connector cowling and save it for reassembly.

    • Remove the upper connector cowling and save it for reassembly.

    • Lift the ends of the battery flex cable (1), the back glass flex cable (2), and the two TrueDepth camera flex cables (3) off the connectors.

      • Caution: You must disconnect the battery flex cable first to ensure that the iPhone remains turned off.

    • Hold the back glass by the edges. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them from the back glass. Then set the back glass facedown on a clean, flat surface.

  2. Remove the TrueDepth camera and save it for reassembly.

  3. Use a torque driver and superscrew bit to remove the superscrew from the camera spacer.

    • Remove the camera spacer and save it for reassembly.

  4. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove three crosshead screws from the camera. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Lift the end of the camera flex cable off the connector.

    • Remove the camera.

      Caution: Don't lift the camera by the flex cable.

Reassembly

Caution

A protective cover is included with a replacement camera. Leave the cover on while installing the new camera.

  1. Put on the gloves to prevent contamination of the camera lenses.

  2. Inspect the grounding springs on the camera for damage.

    • Important: If the grounding springs are bent or broken, you may need to replace the camera.

  3. Position the camera in the enclosure as shown.

  4. Press the end of the camera flex cable to the connector.

  5. Position the camera spacer in the enclosure as shown.

  6. Use the blue torque driver and super screw bit to install one new super screw (923-12364) into the camera spacer.

  7. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 19 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and crosshead bit to install two new crosshead screws (923-12362) into the camera.

  8. Set the torque value on the adjustable torque driver to 14.5 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and crosshead bit to install a new crosshead screw (923-12363) into the camera.

Reinstall the following parts to complete reassembly:

Important

  • Remove the protective cover from the replacement camera before you reinstall the back glass.

  • After you’ve completed all reassembly steps, Repair Assistant will be available on the device and is recommended to finish the repair. Learn how to initiate Repair Assistant.
