Display high-bit characters in Terminal on Mac
To represent foreign language characters, Terminal uses different single-byte and multibyte character encodings. These encodings can use characters with the high–bit set. For example, ISO Latin 1, Shift JIS, or UTF-8.
Note: Before changing character set encodings, make sure programs running in Terminal (shells, editors, and so on) support the character encodings you want to use.
In the Terminal app
on your Mac, choose Terminal > Preferences, then click Profiles.In the Profiles list, select a profile.
Click Advanced.
In the Input section, deselect “Escape non-ASCII input with Control-V.”
In the International section, click the “Text encoding” pop-up menu, then choose a character encoding.
Select “Set locale environment variables on startup.”
