Parental Controls MDM payload settings for Apple devices
You can configure Parental Controls settings for Mac computers enrolled in a mobile device management (MDM) solution. Use the Parental Controls payloads to, for example, control access to content, limit the amount of daily Mac use, and restrict the hours when the Mac can be used.
The Parental Controls payloads support the following. For more information, see Payload information.
Supported payload identifiers: com.apple.applicationaccess.new, com.apple.familycontrols.contentfilter, com.apple.Dictionary, com.apple.gamed, com.apple.familycontrols.timelimits.v2
Supported operating systems and channels: macOS device, macOS user.
Supported enrollment types: Device Enrollment, Automated Device Enrollment.
Duplicates (single or multiple): Single—only one Parental Controls payload can be delivered to a user or device.
You can use the settings in the tables below with the Parental Controls payloads.
Limit use of Siri and Dictation
Setting | Description | Required | |||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Use of Siri and Dictation | Specify whether users can use Siri and Dictation. | No | |||||||||
Hide profanity in Dictionary and Dictation | Profanity can be hidden from the Dictionary app; the Dictation app doesn’t transcribe it. If you hide profanity, these words aren’t shown in the Dictionary app in macOS or in the apps that use the word list. | No |
Filter content
When you enter URLs, start the URL with https:// or http://. If necessary, add separate entries for https:// and http:// versions of the same URL. These settings can’t be edited on iPhone and iPad devices when an installed configuration profile contains content restrictions.
When users visit a site that’s blocked or filtered, a message appears in their web browser that tells them their access is restricted.
Setting | Description | Required | |||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Limit access to websites | Select one of the following:
| Yes | |||||||||
Permitted URLs | Add URLs to this list to permit access to certain websites, even if they’re considered adult by the automatic filter. If you leave this list empty, access is permitted to all nonadult websites except for those listed in Denied URLs. | No | |||||||||
Denied URLs | Add URLs to this list to deny access to certain websites. Users can’t visit these sites even if they’re considered nonadult by the automatic filter. Note: If a restriction contains denied URLs, then any URLs in the Allow URLs field that contradict the denied list are removed. | No | |||||||||
Specific Web Sites Only | Add the websites that you want to give access to. Enter the URL of the website in the URL column. Enter the name for the bookmark in the Name column. | No |
Limit time on Mac
Setting | Description | Required | |||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Days | Select either weekdays or weekends. | Yes | |||||||||
Time allotted | Set the amount of time from unlimited to 8 hours in 30 minute increments. | No | |||||||||
Deny access | Deny access to usage of the Mac. The options are:
After the days of the week are selected, the hours can be chosen. | No |
Note: Each MDM vendor implements these settings differently. To learn how Parental Controls settings are applied to your devices and users, consult your MDM vendor’s documentation.
