Manage your portable computer’s battery
Your portable Mac has a battery so you can use it when an electrical outlet isn’t available. To learn how to charge the battery and maintain battery life, see the topics below. To learn if the battery can be replaced, refer to the documentation that came with your Mac.
Charge your battery by connecting the power adapter to your Mac, then plugging it into an electrical outlet.
For more information, see About your portable computer’s power adapter.
Check your battery’s status. The Battery Status menu at the right side of the menu bar shows you how much charge your battery has and whether it’s currently charging.
For more information, see Monitor your portable computer’s battery.
Conserve your battery’s power by adjusting settings in Energy Saver preferences.
For more information, see Optimize energy settings for a portable Mac.
If you have an older portable Mac with a removable battery, you should calibrate your battery regularly to get the best possible performance.
Instructions for calibrating a user removable battery are provided in the Apple Support article OS X Mavericks: Calibrate the battery in a portable Mac.
