Set up Maps on Mac
You can set your home, work, and school addresses to get directions more easily. You can also show your current location and set your preferred travel mode.
Note: Pinned locations are end-to-end encrypted and cannot be read by Apple.
Set your home, work, or school address
You can personalize your map by setting your home, work, and school addresses, making it easier to get directions to or from those locations. You can set a home or work address that’s different from the home or work address on your contact card in the Contacts app.
Go to the Maps app
on your Mac.
Do one of the following:
Mark a place on the map: Control-click the location of your home, work, or school, then choose Mark Location.
Tip: If the place is named on the map—for example, “Apple Park”—click the label.
Search for a place: Search for the name or address of the location that you want to add, then select a result.
Scroll down the place card, then click Pin.
In the sidebar, click Pinned, then click
next to the pin you want to assign to your home, work, or school address.
If you don’t see the sidebar, click
.
Below Type, select “My home,” “My work,” or “My school.”
To add this address to the Contacts app, select Add to Contact Card.
After you set a pin, you can also adjust the location or remove it.
Note: If you change your home, work, or school address after you add it to your contact card, you may need to update your address in Contacts. See Set up your My Card.
Show your current location automatically
When you turn on Location Services, the Maps app can use your location to help you find directions from where you are to where you want to go, and it shows businesses, restaurants, and other places of interest that are nearby.
Open Privacy & Security settings for me
Go to the System Settings app
on your Mac.
Click Privacy & Security
in the sidebar, then click Location Services.
Turn on Location Services, then turn on Maps.
To see your location, click near the top right of a map. A dot appears on the map to show where you are.
Set your preferred travel type
You can set driving, walking, public transit, or cycling as your preferred travel type for directions.
Go to the Maps app
on your Mac.
Choose Maps > Settings, then click Route Planner.
Select your preferences.
Specify what you want to avoid (tolls, highways, busy roads, stairs, or hills), or for transit, what systems you prefer to use (bus, rail, or ferry).
Tip: This setting determines when you’re reminded to leave for an event you add to Calendar. If you plan to use a travel type that’s different from the preference you set, change this setting in Maps, then reset it to your preference after you add the event to Calendar. See Add, modify, or delete events in Calendar.
