Buy or rent movies and TV shows in the Apple TV app
The Store in the Apple TV app is your all-in-one destination to browse, buy and rent a wide variety of movies and TV shows.
Once you find something you want to watch, you can purchase it, rent it (if it’s a movie), or choose how to watch it if it’s available on multiple channels and apps. If it’s available to start playing immediately, you’ll get the default channel or app that lets you watch it in the highest-quality version.
Tip: To require a user to enter a password before making purchases, go to Settings on Apple TV, then go to Users and Accounts > [username] > Purchases.

Buy or rent a movie
When you select a movie in the Store, a new screen appears with ratings, descriptions and viewing information, including all the ways you can watch the movie on Apple TV.
Go to the Apple TV app on Apple TV.
Open the sidebar, then select Store.
Select a movie, then do any of the following:
Watch a free movie preview in full screen: If a preview is available, it automatically begins playing in the background. To watch the preview in full screen, swipe up on the clickpad or touch surface on your remote, or press up on the clickpad ring (silver remote only).
Play the movie: If the movie is already available to you to watch, select Play to start watching it immediately.

Note: After renting a movie, you have 30 days to start watching it. Once you start watching it, you can play it as many times as you want within 48 hours. During the rental period, you can download the rented movie on one device at any given time and also stream it on another. For example, you can start watching a movie downloaded on your iPhone, then finish watching it later on your Apple TV. Once your time is up, the movie is no longer available.
Open the movie in another app: Select Open In or Try [app name]. If an app isn’t immediately available, follow the onscreen instructions to install it and connect to it. Some apps may require a subscription.
If this is your first time using an app that requires a cable or satellite subscription, you may need to enter your TV provider credentials (see Set up single sign-on with your TV provider on Apple TV).
Add an item to Up Next: If you want to watch the movie later, select Add to Up Next to add it to Up Next in the Home screen. To remove the item from Up Next, select In Up Next.
Go to the next item in the category you’re browsing: Swipe left or right on the clickpad or touch surface, or press left or right on the clickpad ring.
Navigate down to watch additional trailers, browse related items, preview extras, explore cast and crew, see viewing options or get more information.
Press or on your remote to go back to the Store screen.
When you buy or rent a movie, it automatically plays in the highest-quality format available for your Apple TV, including high-definition (HD) and 4K resolution formats. These videos might also feature high dynamic range (HDR) in HDR10, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision 8.1, and Dolby Atmos. For more information, see the Apple Support article Find movies with 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos in the Apple TV app.
