Add your Mac to Find My
You can add your Mac to Find My to help you locate and protect it if it’s ever lost or stolen.
Add your Mac to Find My
If you’ve already set up Find My on this Mac, you don’t need to complete this task.
On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click [your name] at the top of the sidebar. If you can’t see your name, click Sign in with your Apple ID to enter your Apple ID or to create one.
Click iCloud on the right, then click Find My Mac.
If Find My Mac isn’t in the list, click Show All.
Click Turn On, then click Allow when asked to allow Find My Mac to use the location of your Mac.
Click Done.
If the Find My icon in iCloud settings has a warning badge , make sure you turned on Location Services and Find My in Privacy & Security settings.
When you turn on Find My Mac, the ability to locate, lock or erase it is turned on automatically. Depending on the model of your Mac, Activation Lock is also turned on automatically to prevent anyone else from activating and using your Mac, even if it’s completely erased. See Activation Lock and Find My.
Turn Find My Mac options on or off
When you turn on Find My Mac, the Find My network is also turned on so your Mac can be found even when it’s not connected to Wi-Fi. You can turn these options on or off whenever you want.
On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click [your name] at the top of the sidebar. If you can’t see your name, click Sign in with your Apple ID to enter your Apple ID or to create one.
Click iCloud on the right, then click Find My Mac. (If Find My Mac isn’t in the list, click Show All.)
If the Find My icon in iCloud settings has a warning badge , make sure you turned on Location Services and Find My in Privacy & Security settings.
Turn any of the following on or off:
Find My Mac: Turning this option on helps you find your Mac if you misplace it and protect the information on it.
Find My network: Turning this option on helps you find your device (using Bluetooth) even when it isn’t connected to a Wi-Fi or mobile network.
Click Done.
If you’re part of a Family Sharing group and you set up location sharing with a family member before your Mac is lost or stolen, that person can help you locate it using Find My. See Change Location Sharing settings in Family Sharing.
For information about using Find My with other devices, see the user guide for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch or AirPods.
