Prepare your iPhone, Apple Watch, or Android device for trade in

When you trade in a device with your purchase of a new iPhone or Apple Watch, you'll receive a kit that has everything that you need to send your trade-in device to Apple.

Before you send in your device

Prepare your device for trade in and protect your personal information.

Back up and erase your device

Check for unfinished repairs

Check your iPhone Parts and Service History. If a part has Finish Repair next to it, you need to finish that repair before you can trade in your device.*

Suspend cellular service

  • If your iPhone or Android device uses a physical SIM card, remove it.

  • If your iPhone or Android device uses eSIM, contact your wireless provider to suspend service.

  • If you’re trading in a cellular Apple Watch, remove the active cellular plan.

Ship your device to Apple

  • If you chose to have a courier pick up your trade-in device, the courier brings your trade-in kit.

  • If you chose to drop off your device, you get the trade-in kit at the drop-off location.

Make sure to get a receipt from the courier to confirm that you sent your trade-in device.

Apple is not responsible for any damage during shipping.

* If you can't finish a repair, you can't trade in your device. Find out what to do if you can't finish a repair.
