Activation Lock and Find My on Mac
Find My includes a feature called Activation Lock, which is turned on automatically when you set up Find My on your Mac. Activation Lock helps prevent anyone else from using your Mac if itʼs ever lost or stolen.
Important: Activation Lock is only available on Mac computers with Apple silicon or the Apple T2 Security Chip. See the Apple Support article Activation Lock for Mac.
With Activation Lock, your Apple ID and password are required before anyone can:
Turn off Find My on your device
Sign out of your device
Erase and reactivate your device
If you lose your device and remotely erase it, Activation Lock remains on. Your Apple ID and password are required to reactivate the device. If you reset your device and erase all content and settings, Activation Lock is turned off.
If your Mac has multiple users, Activation Lock is turned on only for the first person who sets up Find My. That person’s Apple ID and password are required to turn off Find My, sign out or remotely erase your device.
Important: Make sure that you remember your Apple ID and password and that your password is unique and secure — someone else shouldn’t be able to guess it. See the Apple Support article Security and your Apple ID.
