Crop and straighten images in Pixelmator Pro on iPad
Use the Crop tool to reframe an image to improve its composition or remove unwanted parts. When cropping, you can use a preset or custom aspect ratio, or constrain the image to its original aspect ratio. You can also straighten images or fix the perspective of photos taken at an unintended angle or affected by lens distortion.
Note: The Crop tool affects all layers in your composition.
Crop an image manually
In Pixelmator Pro on iPad, select
in the Tools sidebar.
A crop box with adjustable handles appears in the canvas.
Drag in the crop box to position it in the canvas.
Drag the crop box handles to resize the crop.
If you want to constrain the crop to a specific aspect ratio, tap Aspect Ratio at the top of the Crop pane, then tap Preset and choose an aspect ratio.
Tap Apply at the bottom of the canvas.
Note: By default the Crop tool preserves and hides pixels outside of the cropped area. If you want to delete areas outside of the crop, turn on Delete Cropped Pixels in the Crop pane.
Straighten an image manually
In Pixelmator Pro on iPad, select
in the Tools sidebar.
A crop box with adjustable handles appears in the canvas.
In the Crop pane, drag the Straighten slider to the left or right to rotate the image left or right.
Tip: You can also drag outside of the crop box to rotate the layer.
Tap Apply at the bottom of the canvas.
Crop or straighten an image automatically
You can crop or straighten an image automatically with the Auto Crop or Auto Straighten features. These tools analyze an image and suggest adjustments.
In Pixelmator Pro on iPad, select
in the Tools sidebar.
A crop box with adjustable handles appears in the canvas.
In the Crop pane, Tap Auto Crop or Auto Straighten.
After you apply Auto Crop, you can browse through available crop presets to see crop suggestions based on a particular aspect ratio. Tap Aspect Ratio at the top of the Crop pane, then tap Preset and choose an aspect ratio. Pixelmator Pro automatically adjusts the crop in the selected aspect ratio.
Adjust the perspective of an image
Sometimes a photo taken from a certain angle can look distorted, and vertical lines in the image will appear tilted, rather than straight. This effect is often pronounced after cropping an image. You can adjust the perspective of an image with the Crop tool.
In Pixelmator Pro on iPad, select
in the Tools sidebar.
A crop box with adjustable handles appears in the canvas.
In the Crop pane, drag any of the following sliders:
Vertical: Drag to the left to make the top of the image appear closer. Drag to the right to make the bottom of the image appear closer.
Horizontal: Drag to the left to make the left side of the image appear closer. Drag to the right to make the right side of the image appear closer.
Choose a crop overlay
When cropping images, you can use crop guides to help frame your subject. There are seven different guides you can choose from.
In Pixelmator Pro on iPad, select
in the Tools sidebar.
In the Crop pane, tap the Overlay pop-up menu, then choose an overlay guide:
Rule of thirds: A grid of nine equal-size rectangles.
Grid: A grid of equal-size squares. When you straighten an image, use this overlay to adjust horizontal and vertical lines more precisely.
Diagonal: A diagonal overlay most useful for cropping images with strong perspective.
Triangle: A triangle overlay helpful for straightening images with uneven diagonals. Focal objects can be placed at the tips of the triangles or along the diagonal lines of the overlay.
Golden ratio: An overlay similar to “rule of thirds,” but with more focus on the center. Use this overlay to bring subjects or objects in an image into the line of sight.
Golden spiral: A guide for balancing images that feature curving or sweeping lines, with the focus at the center of the spiral.
Center: A crosshair guide that always points to the center of the crop.
Note: In the Overlay pop-up menu, you can choose to display the overlay guides always, never, or automatically (only as you drag the crop box handles).
