Use the Passwords app to create, manage, and share passwords and passkeys across Apple devices

The Passwords app makes it easy to access your account passwords and passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and verification codes all in one place. Passwords also helps you manage your credentials across devices with iCloud Keychain and alerts you to passwords that might not be secure.

Use the Passwords app

Starting in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and visionOS 2, the Passwords app helps you manage your passwords, passkeys, and verification codes. You can generate create and save strong passwords, share credentials with friends and families, customize passwords, and more. Passwords also alerts you to common password weaknesses, like a password that can easily be guessed, that you’ve used multiple times for different accounts, or have appeared in known data leaks.

To use the Passwords app and take advantage of these features, make sure to update all of your Apple devices to the latest software version.

Create and save strong passwords

The most secure password is often one that you don't make yourself. When you enter a new account name on supported websites and in supported apps, your device suggests a unique, complex password.

You can also use Passwords to generate a strong password for an existing account (for example, to replace a weaker password that you created yourself).

Turn on Password AutoFill

With Password AutoFill, your Apple device automatically enters the passwords or passkeys that you save in Passwords. That way, you can use unique, complex passwords for all of your accounts — without having to memorize them.

To turn on Password AutoFill, go to Settings (or System Settings on Mac) > General > AutoFill & Passwords, then turn on AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys.

On Mac, you can use AutoFill on supported third-party browsers by enabling an extension. You can find these extensions on your browser's web store.

Turn on iCloud Keychain

iCloud Keychain makes your passwords and passkeys (as well as other account information, such as credit card information and Wi-Fi information) available on all of your approved Apple devices and keeps that information up to date across devices.

  • If you didn’t turn on iCloud Keychain when you first set up your device, go to Settings (or System Settings on Mac) > your name > iCloud > Passwords and Keychain, then turn on iCloud Keychain.

  • When you set up a new device, you can approve it on another device using iCloud Keychain or with an old device passcode. Then iCloud Keychain begins updating automatically on the new device.

Share your passwords and passkeys

You can use Passwords to set up a Shared Group — an easy, secure way to share passwords, passkeys, and Sign in with Apple credentials with your family and other trusted contacts.

You can also share individual passwords and passkeys securely via AirDrop.

Passwords also stores your Wi-Fi passwords. You can share them with friends and family directly from your Apple device to theirs, without actually telling them your password.

Set up automatic verification codes

For websites and apps that offer two-factor (or multi-factor) authentication — which helps prevent other people from accessing your account, even if they know your passwords — Passwords can set up and store automatic verification codes. That way, you can take advantage of the security of two-factor authentication without relying on SMS messages or additional apps.

To set up an automatic verification code, open Passwords, select All, and then select a website or app. Under Security, choose Set Up Verification Code....

Security recommendations in Passwords

If your Apple device identifies common weaknesses (such as an easily guessed password or one that you’ve used multiple times) in your passwords, Passwords alerts you to these weaknesses and recommends that you update them. Passwords also alerts you if your passwords appear in known data leaks.

In Passwords, choose Security and select an account with a weak or compromised password.

Use iCloud Passwords on your PC

If you use iCloud for Windows on your PC, you can set up iCloud Passwords to access your passwords in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.

About passkeys

Passkeys are a replacement for passwords, designed to provide websites and apps a passwordless sign-in experience that’s both more convenient and secure. Passkeys are always strong and uniquely generated for every account by your own device, and are less vulnerable to social engineering schemes like phishing.
