Format notes on Mac
Change the formatting in a note — for example, change the font, size or colour; bold, underline or italicise text — and colour-code your notes with different highlight options. You can also apply paragraph styles and change the alignment.
Note: All Notes features described in this guide are available when using iCloud notes. Some features aren’t available when using accounts from other providers.
Format and highlight text
Make your notes your own — bold, italicise or underline text, change the font or colour, and highlight key words and information.
Go to the Notes app on your Mac.
Open a note, then do any of the following:
Bold, italicise, underline or strikethrough text: Select some text, click , then choose an option.
Highlight text: Select some text, click , then click . To change the highlight colour, click the coloured circle next to the highlight button, then choose a colour.
Change text font, colour, size and more: Select the text you want to change, Control-click the selection, choose Font > Show Fonts, then use the Fonts window to make changes.
Change paragraph styles and text alignment
You can change the paragraph style — for example, title, heading, subheading or body — to quickly format a selection of text. You can also change the alignment, and customise the default title paragraph style for all new notes.
Note: To use paragraph styles and specify the paragraph style that’s used when you create a new note, you must be using iCloud notes or notes stored on your Mac.
Go to the Notes app on your Mac.
Open a note, then do any of the following:
Apply a paragraph style to a paragraph: Click anywhere in the text you want to format, click , then choose a style.
Change the default title paragraph style: Choose Notes > Settings, click the “New notes start with” pop-up menu, then choose an option.
Change text alignment: Click anywhere in the text you want to change, choose Format > Text, then choose an option.
Collapse sections and headings
Collapsible sections make it easy to manage long notes.
Note: To use collapsible sections, you must be using iCloud notes or notes stored on your Mac.
Go to the Notes app on your Mac.
Open a note, then select the text for the heading.
Click , then click Heading or Subheading.
Add content to the section, then do any of the following:
Collapse the section: Click to hide the content in the section.
Expand a section: Click to view the content in the section.
