Use Genius Shuffle or Genius Playlists in Music on Mac
You can use Genius to have Music play songs from your library that sound great together. There are two ways you can use Genius:
Genius Shuffle: If you can’t decide what to listen to, use Genius Shuffle — Music chooses a song from your library and then plays songs that go well with it.
Note: To use Genius Shuffle, you need enough songs in your library to generate a complementary list of songs.
Genius Playlists: Choose a song and Music creates a playlist of songs that sound great together.
To create Genius Playlists and Genius Shuffle, Music uses anonymous information about your library and other Music libraries. The iTunes Store updates its Genius data constantly, based on new information from the iTunes Store and customers’ libraries.
Note: Not all features are available in the Apple Music Voice Plan. Apple Music and Apple Music Voice aren’t available in all countries or regions. See the Apple Support article Availability of Apple Media Services.
Turn Genius on or off
Genius is a free service. To use Genius, you must turn on Genius (on each computer you want to use it on), be connected to the internet and have an Apple ID.
Important: If your music library is synced to multiple devices, you can’t turn Genius off.
In the Music app on your Mac, choose File > Library > Turn On Genius (or Turn Off Genius).
Turning off Genius turns off Genius Playlists and Genius Shuffle.
Create a Genius Playlist
Genius Playlists appear in the sidebar, below Music Playlists. A Genius Playlist has the Genius icon next to it.
In the Music app on your Mac, click Songs in the sidebar.
Select a song, then choose File > New > Genius Playlist.
To make changes to the playlist, do one of the following:
Change the maximum number of songs in a Genius Playlist: Click the arrow next to the song total, then choose a number from the pop-up menu.
Get new songs based on the same song: Click Refresh.
Use Genius Shuffle
In the Music app on your Mac, choose Controls > Genius Shuffle or press Option-Space bar.
Tip: You can also hold down the Option key while a song is playing, then click in the playback controls.
To change the selection of songs, repeat the above step.
To delete a playlist, select it and press the Delete key. See Delete songs and other items.
Your Genius results are automatically updated once a week when Music is open. You can update them manually — for example, when you add new music to your library from a CD or a website or if a song has no Genius suggestions. Choose File > Library > Update Genius.
