Sign into or out of FaceTime on Mac
Before you can make or receive FaceTime calls or phone calls on your Mac, you need to sign into FaceTime using your Apple ID and make sure FaceTime is turned on. See FaceTime requirements.
Sign in and set up FaceTime
You need to sign into FaceTime the first time you open the app or if you’ve signed out.
In the FaceTime app on your Mac, enter your Apple ID and password.
Click Next. FaceTime is on automatically.
If you forgot your Apple ID or password or if you need to create an Apple ID, go to the Apple ID account website.
Choose FaceTime > Preferences, click Settings, then do any of the following:
Choose how people can call you: Below “You can be reached for FaceTime at”, select the tick box next to each address and phone number that you want to make available for FaceTime calls.
You can update this list on the Apple ID account website. See Choose how people can call you in FaceTime.
Highlight the speaker in calls: Below Automatic Prominence, select Speaking.
Take Live Photos in FaceTime calls: Select “Allow Live Photos to be captured during Video calls”.
Choose the phone number or email address other callers see: Click the “Start new calls from” pop-up menu, then choose the phone number or email.
This only appears if you have more than one email address or phone number set up.
Change ringtones: Click the Ringtone pop-up menu, then choose a new ringtone. See Change FaceTime ringtones.
Change location: Click the Location pop-up menu, then choose the country or region that your FaceTime account is registered in.
Choose the default app to start calls from: Click the “Default for calls” pop-up menu, then choose an app.
This option only appears if you have more than one calling app on your Mac.
Choose FaceTime > Preferences, click SharePlay, then select SharePlay to view TV shows and movies together, listen to music together or share your screen in calls.
Make sure you sign in using the same Apple ID on every Apple device. See the Apple Support article Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch.
Sign out of FaceTime
When you sign out of FaceTime, you can’t receive FaceTime calls or phone calls until you sign in again.
In the FaceTime app on your Mac, choose FaceTime > Preferences, then click Settings.
Click Sign Out.
Turn FaceTime on or off
If you want to stay signed in to FaceTime but stop receiving calls, you can turn off FaceTime. If someone calls you, you won’t receive a notification for the call; to the caller, it looks like you’re not available.
In the FaceTime app on your Mac, do one of the following:
Turn off FaceTime: Choose FaceTime > Turn FaceTime Off.
Note: Instead of turning off FaceTime, you can turn on Do Not Disturb or another Focus in Control Centre, which prevents notifications from disturbing you.
Turn on FaceTime: Choose FaceTime > Turn FaceTime On.
Note: To block all FaceTime or phone calls, turn off FaceTime or sign out of FaceTime on each Apple device. (You can also block individual callers. People who are on your blocked list are blocked on all your Apple devices signed in to FaceTime and iCloud using the same Apple ID.)
