Intro to MDM servers in Apple Business Essentials
Devices added to an organization at the time of purchase or through Apple Configurator can be assigned to a mobile device management (MDM) solution (called an MDM Server in Apple Business Essentials) and organizations can have multiple MDM servers.
Assigning a device to an MDM server is a setting that’s applied the next time a device or devices go through Setup Assistant. Those devices use Automated Device Enrollment, allowing the device to be enrolled into management during initial setup. Assigning an MDM server doesn’t affect a current enrollment of a device.
In Apple Business Essentials, an MDM server is automatically created for you when you purchase a plan. All MDM servers can be found under Preferences > Your MDM servers. It’s possible to have an Apple Business Essentials MDM server as well as third-party MDM servers, however, devices enrolled with an Apple Business Essentials plan can’t be enrolled in a third-party MDM server.
