Before You Begin

Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torx Plus 5IP 50 mm bit

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

  1. Use the black stick to lift the end of the audio board flex cable off the connector.

  2. Remove the battery cover.

  3. Note that the audio board flex cable is adhered to the top of the battery tray.

  4. Gently peel up the audio board flex cable to release the adhesive and lift the flex cable from the battery tray.

  5. If you're installing a replacement audio board, use the black stick to remove the adhesive from the top of the battery tray where shown. If you're reinstalling the existing audio board, skip to step 6.

  6. Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to remove the two 5IP screws (923-14180) from the audio board.

  7. Remove the audio board from the top case.

Reassembly

  1. Position the audio board in the top case as shown.

  2. Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to partially reinstall the two 5IP screws (923-14180) into the audio board.

  3. Keep the 5IP bit in the adjustable torque driver. Set the torque value to 11.5 Ncm.

  4. Gently push the audio board against the side of the top case as shown, while keeping it flat on the surface of the top case. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to fully reinstall the two 5IP screws into the audio board.

  5. Ensure that the audio board is laying flat on the top case. If it's protruding from the top case, use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to loosen the two 5IP screws. Then repeat step 4.

  6. Press the end of the audio board flex cable to the connector.

  7. If you're installing a replacement audio board, peel the adhesive liner off the flex cable. If you're reinstalling the existing audio board, skip to step 8.

  8. Use the flat end of the black stick to route the audio board flex cable between the edge of the battery tray and the battery foam as shown.

  9. Press the audio board flex cable with the black stick as shown to adhere it to the top edge battery tray.

  10. Place the battery cover on the battery by attaching the magnetic clips to the mushroom set screws.

Reinstall the following parts to complete reassembly:
