
Reduce the size of a PDF in Preview on Mac
To save storage space, you can compress a PDF in Preview.
Note: When compressed, the PDF may be of lower quality than the original. The resulting file size and image quality may vary depending on the options you select.
Reduce PDF file size automatically
Go to the Preview app
on your Mac.
Open the PDF you want to make smaller.
Choose File > Export.
In the Quartz Filter pop-up menu, choose Reduce File Size.
Click Save.
If you’re asked whether you want to replace the existing file, do one of the following:
Replace the existing file: Click Save.
Choose a different filename for the new file: Click Cancel, enter a new filename in the Export As field, then click Save.
Choose options for reducing PDF file size
Go to the Preview app
on your Mac.
Open the PDF you want to make smaller.
Choose File > Export.
Select any of the following checkboxes:
Create Linearized PDF: Optimize the PDF for fast loading and viewing in web browsers.
Optimize images for screen: Optimize images for screen viewing to reduce file size.
Save images as JPEG: Convert images to JPEG format, which uses image compression.
Click Save.
If you’re asked whether you want to replace the existing file, do one of the following:
Replace the existing file: Click Save.
Choose a different filename for the new file: Choose Cancel, enter a new filename in the Export As field, then click Save.
