Unassign a plan in Apple Business Essentials
If users or devices should no longer be assigned to a plan, they can be removed individually or by removing assigned user groups. When all users, user groups, or devices are removed, this doesn’t remove the plan, rather it just removes the assigned users and devices.
If a user or device is removed from a plan with AppleCare+ for Business Essentials, the number of repair credits associated with that user or device are removed from the organization’s total number of credits.
Unassign a user or user group from an employee plan
When you remove a user or user group from an employee plan, if the users aren’t associated to another plan, unassigning them from a plan also removes:
All managed apps, configurations, settings, and security policies
The Apple Business Essentials app
Additional iCloud storage
If a plan is downgraded, the associated storage is reduced to the free storage or the storage included in the reduced plan.
If the iCloud storage exceeds the new storage plan capacity, iCloud won’t sync or update the user’s information. iCloud updates again when you increase your storage capacity or delete information to make more space.
To make sure your organization doesn’t lose any information, learn how to copy what’s in iCloud. See the Apple Support article Archive or make copies of the information you store in iCloud.
The ability for a user to use their support PIN (personal identification number) to contact Apple if they previously had a plan with AppleCare+ for Business Essentials
Note: If a user is changed from a three device plan to a one device plan, ensure the user has only one device signed in when the plan is changed. If more than one device is signed in, all devices are signed out and the user must sign in the device they want to continue using.
An employee plan assignment is also automatically removed when:
A device is released from Apple Business Essentials (this also unenrolls the device from device management)
A user is removed or deactivated from Apple Business Essentials
A user is removed from an identity provider (IdP) linked to Apple Business Essentials (upon the next sync)
A user is removed from a Smart User Group or a manually created User Group with a plan assignment
A Smart User Group or a manually created User Group with an associated plan is removed from Apple Business Essentials
A user’s Managed Apple Account is signed out of a device (See Use Managed Apple Accounts)
Note: If a user signs out on a device less than 30 days after they signed in (for example, on day 22) and then signs back in, the coverage continues from the day they signed out (in this example, day 22).
Note: If a device is currently in repair, the repair is completed before the device is removed from the plan.
Unassign a device from a device plan
When you remove a device from a device plan, if a device isn’t associated with another plan, unassigning them from a plan also removes all managed apps, configurations, settings, and security policies. A device plan assignment is also automatically removed when a device is released from Apple Business Essentials (this also unenrolls the device from device management).
Note: If a device is currently in repair, the repair is completed before the device is removed from the plan.
