Manage content tokens in Apple Business Essentials
Third-party mobile device management (MDM) solutions assign content to devices or users by communicating with Apple Business Essentials. For your MDM solution to link and communicate, a content token is required. Contact your MDM vendor for specific information about installing the token in your MDM solution. The following events invalidate the token:
Annual expiration: Content token expire annually, so make note of your token’s renewal date upon linking. To avoid interruption of service, remember to download an updated token and upload it to your organization’s MDM solution before your current token expires.
Password changes: If the account that downloaded the token and linked the MDM solution to Apple Business Essentials has their password changed, the token is invalidated.
Important: If your organization has a monthly subscription to Apple Business Essentials, the content token for the primary location named for your organization is used by Apple Business Essentials for assigning app licenses, and should not be used by another MDM solution. If the content token for the primary location was uploaded to an MDM solution prior to beginning a monthly subscription to Apple Business Essentials, it should be removed to avoid inconsistencies in app license inventory and app assignment failures.
Using content tokens in third-party MDM solutions
In Apple Business Essentials, content tokens representing locations other than the primary location can be used by another MDM solution. To use a token with a third-party MDM solution:
In Apple Business Essentials, sign in with a user that has the role of Administrator.
Create an additional location if one does not exist already. See Configure locations.
Transfer any licenses you want to use in the new location. See Transfer licenses to another location.
Download a content token
In Apple Business Essentials, sign in with a user that has the role of Administrator or Content Manager.
Select your name at the bottom of the sidebar, select Preferences
, then select Payments & Billing 
.Under Content Tokens, select the token name where the MDM server is assigned.
Consult your MDM vendor’s documentation to upload the content token.
