log (logarithmic) recording
A method of encoding video that preserves shadow and highlight details. A log recording takes the dynamic range (exposure range) of the source image and maps it across a logarithmic curve. This allows you to flexibly manipulate the shadows and highlights in post-production. A log recording looks flat, desaturated, and lacking in contrast. But when you apply a LUT or make manual color corrections, the video reflects the natural vibrancy and contrast of the original scene.
