Gather information about an iPhone or iPad
Overview
During the Investigate step of Systematic troubleshooting, information from the iPhone or iPad often determines whether the focus should be on hardware, software, configuration, or user behavior. This article lists the information sources to gather, what each source reveals, and how to capture it.
Isolating the issue
As you investigate, gather information from the following sources. Each one helps narrow down which technology layer the issue traces to: hardware, operating system, configuration, apps, network, or user state.
System overview
The iPhone or iPad model, iOS or iPadOS version, and serial number (and IMEI on iPhone or iPad with cellular) establish the baseline for an investigation: whether the device is supported, whether iOS or iPadOS is current, and what hardware specs apply. The serial number and IMEI are needed for AppleCare and carrier references.
Go to Settings > General > About. The summary shows model name, model number, iOS or iPadOS version, serial number, and (on iPhone or iPad with cellular) the IMEI.
Battery health
Performance throttling, unexpected shutdowns, and reduced runtime can all indicate a battery in need of service. Even when the user reports software issues, battery condition can be a contributing cause.
Choose Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging on iPhone, or Settings > Battery > Battery Health on iPad. The view shows Maximum Capacity (a percentage of the original) and, on iPhone, Peak Performance Capability state.
Storage status
A nearly-full device can cause unpredictable behavior. Apps may refuse to launch, system updates may fail, and performance may be degraded. A storage check is a quick first step to ensure you’re addressing symptoms correctly.
Choose Settings > General > iPhone Storage (or iPad Storage). The view shows total used and free space, broken down by category, and is also the starting point for offloading or removing apps when needed.
Network status
Connectivity issues can stem from the device, the network, or the carrier. Checking Wi-Fi, cellular signal, and carrier helps narrow down which.
Choose Settings > Wi-Fi to see the connected network and joined networks. For cellular on iPhone or cellular iPad, choose Settings > Cellular to see the carrier, current usage, and per-app data permissions.
App permissions and Background App Refresh
Apps need to request access to sensitive information (Location Services, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, and others) before they can use it. Each app also has its own setting for refreshing in the background. Misconfigured permissions can cause features to stop working silently, notifications to fail, or background syncs to be skipped.
Choose Settings > Privacy & Security to see permissions by category, then drill into each to see which apps are allowed. Choose Settings > General > Background App Refresh to see which apps are allowed to update while not in the foreground.
Software update status
iOS or iPadOS version gaps can cause behavioral differences: features not yet available, fixes not yet applied, or security policies not yet updated. Confirm the device’s current version against the latest available before deeper investigation.
Choose Settings > General > Software Update. The view shows the current version and any available update.
Managed environments
Configuration profiles on an iPhone or iPad, whether installed manually by the user or by a device management service, appear in Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
The view shows the device’s enrollment status (if any), each installed configuration profile, and the option to remove user-installed profiles when permitted. Tapping into a profile reveals its identifier, organization, and the payloads it includes.
