MacBook Pro (M5 family) Battery Discharge Procedure

Use this procedure to discharge or drain a battery prior to attempting to remove it for the following models:

  • MacBook Pro (14-inch, M5)

  • MacBook Pro (14-inch, M5 Pro or M5 Max)

  • MacBook Pro (16-inch, M5 Pro or M5 Max)

Before You Begin

  • Remove the computer from any case.

  • Don't connect the computer to a power adapter.

  • Ensure that the computer is on a stable, hard, flat surface with good ventilation.

Battery Discharge Tool Steps

  1. Place the computer in diagnostics mode.

  2. Run the Battery Drain Tool suite.

  3. Wait until the suite completes the discharge. The time will vary based on the initial charge level of the battery, but may take as long as 2.5 hours when the battery is fully charged.

  4. After the suite has finished, proceed with the battery repair.

    • Warning: Don't reconnect the power adapter until the repair is completed.

Warning

If the Battery Drain Tool suite fails, don't remove the battery from the computer. Replace the top case with battery and keyboard.
