Present your driver's license or state ID from Apple Wallet

You can add and use your driver's license or state ID in Apple Wallet on your iPhone or Apple Watch in participating states, and at select businesses, venues, and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints at airports in those states.*

  • When you use your license or ID at a TSA checkpoint, you need to authenticate with the Face ID or Touch ID associated with your license or ID before your phone presents your information to the identity reader.

  • To use your license or ID on your Apple Watch at a TSA checkpoint, you need to unlock your iPhone using the associated Face ID or Touch ID each time that you put on your Apple Watch. Then, you can use your license or ID without authenticating until you take the watch off again.

  • You can also present your license or ID to help verify your identity information in participating apps and app-clips. For example, you can use your license or ID in Apple Wallet to help verify your identity when applying for a credit card in a financial services app.

When you authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID to share your information, you need to do so with the Face ID or Touch ID associated with your license or ID.

How to present your driver's license or state ID in person

  1. On an iPhone using Face ID, double-click the side button. On an iPhone with Touch ID, double-click the Home button. If prompted, authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

  2. Tap your driver's license or state ID.

  3. Hold the top of your iPhone or the display of your Apple Watch near the identity reader.

  4. On the screen of your device, review the information that will be shared.

  5. To provide your consent:

    • On an iPhone using Face ID: Double-click the side button.

    • On an iPhone using Touch ID: Hold your finger on the Home button.

    • On an Apple Watch: Double-click the side button.

When you successfully present your license or ID, a checkmark and Done appear on your device.

Depending on where you present your license or ID, there might be additional requirements. For example, when you present your license or ID to the TSA, their identity reader captures your image for comparison with the image presented from your license or ID in Apple Wallet.

How to share your driver's license or state ID in an app with your iPhone

  1. In an app or app-clip, tap the Verify with Apple Wallet or Continue with Apple Wallet button.

  2. Review the information that will be shared and other details:

    • The information from your license or ID that the app is requesting.

    • The information that the app will store, and how long the app plans to store that information.

    • The reason that the app is requesting this information.

  3. To provide your consent:

    • On an iPhone with Face ID: Double-click the side button, then authenticate.

    • On an iPhone with Touch ID: Hold your finger on the Home button.

IDs in Apple Wallet take advantage of the privacy and security features already built into iPhone and Apple Watch to help protect against tampering and theft:

  • Your driver's license or state ID data are encrypted.

  • Neither the state issuing authority nor Apple can see when and where you use your license or ID.

  • Biometric authentication using Face ID and Touch ID helps make sure that only you can view and use your license or ID.
