Summary

iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS support MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service). This article lists the system requirements for MMS and explains how to begin using MMS.

Products Affected

iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS

To send and receive MMS messages on your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS:

1. Verify that your iPhone and wireless carrier meet the system requirements. To use MMS you need:

  • iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS. The original iPhone does not support sending or receiving MMS messages.
  • iPhone OS 3.1 or later.
  • A wireless carrier that supports MMS.
  • A coverage area in which you can place and receive a call and access the Internet using Safari on your iPhone (3G network coverage recommended).

2. If this article shows that your carrier supports MMS, you should see MMS Messaging in the Settings > Messages screen:

If you don't see MMS Messaging, you may need to install a carrier-settings update. Connect your iPhone to iTunes to do so—if there is no carrier-settings update available in iTunes when you connect your iPhone, check with your carrier to confirm that it supports MMS.

3. After installing the carrier-settings update, restart your iPhone. If you still don't see the option for MMS Messaging in your iPhone's Settings screen, check with your carrier to confirm that it supports MMS.

4. Try sending an MMS message by tapping Messages and adding a test photo.

Note: If your iPhone meets the system requirements, your wireless account may still need to be provisioned to send and receive MMS messages. Many carriers will automatically provision your wireless account for MMS when you first send an MMS message. Other carriers will provision customers' wireless accounts for MMS automatically in large groups at different times. If necessary, check with your carrier to confirm you are provisioned to send or receive MMS messages.
