The key difference between the MacBook Air (Original) and the MacBook Air (Late 2008) and later is the video out port in the I/O hatch.

The original MacBook Air included a Micro-DVI connector.  It has a narrow rectangular shape, as below.

 

The MacBook Air (Late 2008) and later includes a Mini DisplayPort. This connector is narrower than the Micro-DVI connector.
