Syncing music to iPod shuffle

iTunes includes a feature called Autofill that can quickly sync audio content from your library or a selected playlist to your iPod shuffle. You can also manually sync content. To learn more, review the steps below.

Identify your iPod shuffle

Syncing music automatically to iPod shuffle (3rd and 4th generation)

  1. Connect your iPod shuffle to your computer and select your device in iTunes (below Devices):

  2. In the main iTunes browser window, select Music, then select "Sync music."
  3. Select a playlist, artist, genre, album, or your entire music library for your music sync settings.

  4. When you select the checkbox labeled "Automatically fill free space with songs", iTunes will automatically sync as much music as possible to iPod shuffle. If the playlist you selected contains more music than iPod shuffle can hold, Autofill will sync a subset of the music. The iTunes LCD will display the sync progress and notify you when the iPod sync is complete.

  5. If you have turned on disk use, disconnect iPod shuffle by selecting it under Devices and clicking the eject icon (iPod shuffle is ready to be disconnected when the status light stops flashing).

Syncing music using Autofill to iPod shuffle (3rd and 4th generation)

  1. Connect iPod shuffle to your computer and open iTunes.
  2. Select iPod shuffle in the Devices section on the left side of the iTunes window.
  3. Click Settings in the main iTunes browser window, in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
  4. Select your settings in "Autofill settings" and click OK.

  5. Back in the main iTunes browser window, click the Autofill From menu in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.

  6. Choose the music source list or playlist you want to Autofill on your iPod.

  7. Click Autofill in the main iTunes browser window, in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. The iTunes LCD will display the sync progress and notify you when the iPod sync is complete.
  8. If you have turned on disk use, disconnect iPod shuffle by selecting it under Devices and clicking the eject icon.

    Note: iPod shuffle is ready to be disconnected when the status light stops flashing.

Syncing music using Autofill to iPod shuffle (1st and 2nd generation)

  1. Connect iPod shuffle to your computer and open iTunes.
  2. Select iPod shuffle in the Devices section on the left side of the iTunes window.
  3. In the main iTunes browser window, select Contents.
  4. Click Settings and select your settings.

  5. Choose which music you want on your iPod in the Autofill From drop-down menu.

  6. Click Autofill. The iTunes LCD will display the sync progress and notify you when the iPod sync is complete.

  7. If you have turned on disk use, disconnect iPod shuffle by selecting it under Devices and clicking the eject icon (iPod shuffle is ready to be disconnected when the status light stops flashing).

Syncing music manually to iPod shuffle

If you prefer not to use Autofill to sync music to your iPod shuffle, you can manually sync music instead.

  1. Connect iPod shuffle to your computer and open iTunes.
  2. Select the option to "Manually manage music" from the iPod Summary tab of the iPod settings screen. 
  3. Select your Music, Podcasts, or Audiobooks Library or a playlist on the left side of the iTunes window.
  4. Select one or more pieces of audio content and drag them to the iPod shuffle icon under Devices.

  5. If you have turned on disk use, disconnect iPod shuffle by selecting it under Devices and clicking the eject icon (iPod shuffle is ready to be disconnected when the status light stops flashing).
