iPhone and iPod touch: Charging the battery
Summary
iPhone and iPod touch have an internal rechargeable battery. To charge the battery, choose one of the options below:
- Connect iPhone or iPod touch to a power outlet using the included cable and a USB power adapter to charge the battery.
Note: iPhone 3G and iPod touch (2nd generation) do not support FireWire and will not charge from any FireWire-based power source. If you connect either of these devices to a FireWire-based charger or accessory, you will receive the alert screen below:
- Connect the device to your computer (not your keyboard) using the included cable to charge the battery and sync. Your computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If the device is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the battery may drain.

An icon in the upper-right corner of the screen shows battery charging status. If you charge the battery while syncing or using iPhone or iPod touch, it might take longer to charge.
Note: If using a portable computer, make sure it is plugged into power and that the lid or display is open. If the lid is closed, the computer may go into standby, sleep, or hibernation mode and iPhone or iPod touch may not charge.
Important: If iPhone or iPod touch is very low on power, it may display one of the following images indicating that the device needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it. If the device is extremely low on power, the display may be blank for up to two minutes before one of the low-battery images appears. If you don't see the white charging or plug icons, your iPhone or iPod touch may be connected with a FireWire cable. Disconnect the FireWire cable and connect the iPhone or iPod touch to a USB cable or dock.
