iTunes: Syncing media content to iPod

iTunes can sync your music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and iTunes U content to your iPod. Learn how to configure automatic syncing or to add content manually to your iPod.

Note: If you're using an iPod shuffle (1st or 2nd generation), you can sync music using these steps.

Syncing automatically

If you want iTunes to update your music, videos, or podcasts when you connect your device, you should sync automatically. If iTunes is open and you connect your device using the USB Dock Connector cable, iTunes will sync with your device.

Syncing music

  1. Connect your iPod to your computer and open iTunes.
  2. Click the button with your device's name, below the Spotlight window.
  3. In the main iTunes browser window, select Music.
  4. Select Sync Music. You can select "Include music videos" if you want to sync Music videos to your device.

  5. Your device needs to have enough free space to sync the content that you selected from your library.
    Tip: You can use the capacity bar at the bottom of the device settings window to see how much free space is available. The window will update with an estimate as you select content.

  6. Click Apply. iTunes will sync the content you selected to your device. The iTunes LCD will show the sync progress and notify you when the sync is complete.
  7. To disconnect your device, find your device in iTunes and click the eject icon. 

Syncing movies, TV shows, podcasts, and iTunes U content

  1. Connect your iPod to your computer and open iTunes.
  2. Click the button with your device's name, below the Spotlight window.
  3. In the main iTunes window, select Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, or iTunes U.
  4. You can choose to automatically sync all your content or content that you haven't watched. For TV shows, podcasts, and iTunes U, you can also sync automatically based on TV Shows, podcasts, or collections.

  5. Your device needs to have enough free space to sync the content that you selected from your library.
    Tip: You can use the capacity bar at the bottom of the device settings window to see how much free space is available. The window will update with an estimate as you select content.

  7. Click Apply and iTunes will sync the audio content you selected to your device. The iTunes LCD will show the sync progress and notify you when the sync is complete.
  8. To disconnect your device, find your device in iTunes and click the eject icon.

If you prefer not to automatically sync content to your device, you can set up manual syncing. Learn how to manually manage your content with more than one computer and your device.

Syncing music with Autofill

When you enable the "Manually manage" option, you can use Autofill to quickly sync audio content from your music library or a selected playlist. Autofill settings allow you to adjust how songs are selected for syncing and allocate space for disk use.

You may want to connect an iPhone, iPad, or iPod to your computer to charge the battery, but what if iTunes automatically attempts to sync to the connected device? Follow these steps to prevent your device from syncing automatically.

  1. Open iTunes Preferences and select the Devices tab.
  2. To prevent iPod, iPhone, and iPad devices from syncing automatically, select the option below:
  3. "Prevent your device from syncing automatically"

  4. After you select this option, reconnect your device.
