Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings using a computer

Erase your iPhone, iPad, or iPod and install the latest iOS, iPadOS, or iPod software using a computer. This factory restore removes all information and settings from your device.

Prepare your device

  1. Update your Mac or PC. If you're using iTunes, make sure that you have the latest version.

  2. Create a backup.

  3. Go to Settings.

  4. Tap [Your Name].

  5. Tap Find My.

  6. Tap Find My [device].

  7. Turn Find My [device] off.

  8. Enter your Apple Account password.

  9. Tap the done button on your keyboard.

Restore your device to factory settings

  1. Connect your device to your computer.

  2. Click Allow if the "Allow accessory to connect?" alert appears on your computer.

  3. Open the Finder on Mac or the Apple Devices app on a PC. If you're not sure which Finder features apply, check which macOS you're using.

  4. Select your device when it appears in the sidebar of the Finder window or the sidebar of the Apple Devices app.

  5. Click Trust to allow the computer to access your device.

  6. Tap Trust on your device.

  7. Enter your device passcode.

  8. On your computer, click “Restore [device],” then follow the onscreen instructions.1 2

  9. Review the terms and conditions and click Agree.

Once the restore process finishes, the Hello screen appears on your device.

  2. If asked to create a backup, click "Back Up" or "Don't Back Up," then click "Restore" to confirm.
