Mac OS X 10.4 or later: Printing mailing labels or envelopes with multiple names

When using Address Book in Mac OS X 10.4 or later to print mailing labels or envelopes, the names that print above the address will include the prefix, suffix, first, middle, and last names on the card you have selected, along with any related names on the card that are labeled as spouse, partner, child, father, mother, parent, brother, or sister. These related names will appear on the label or envelope if no card exists for the related name, or if another card exists for the related name which contains the same address as the card you are printing.

Related names will not appear on the envelope or label if another card exists with the same first name as the related name and a different address than the card you are printing. To ensure that the related name will get printed, create a card with the same name as the related name, and include the same address as the card you are printing.

For example, if you want to print a label for the card "Sally Miller" which includes her spouse's name "Sam Miller", but you have a second card in your address book for "Sam Jones" with a different address, Sam's name will not appear on the label for Sally Miller. You can create a card for "Sam Miller" which has the same address as "Sally Miller" and then Sally's mailing label will include Sam's name.

If you would like to print a mailing label or envelope that contains only one name (none of the related names), you can either:

  • Create cards for each of the related names that you do not want to print, without entering an address on the new cards or enter an address that is different from the card you are printing. For example, if you are printing an envelope for John Smith and John Smith's card contains a "spouse" named Jane Smith, you can create a new card for Jane Smith which contains no mailing address, and Jane's name will be left off John's envelope.

  • -or-

  • Use a label other than spouse, partner, child, father, mother, parent, brother, or sister for the related names that you do not want to print. For example, you can select Custom... from the pop-up menu and enter "Brother" in place of using "brother" (all-lowercase), or select Custom... and enter "wife" in place of "spouse".
