If you’re asked to trust or update a plug-in in Safari on Mac

Some websites use plug-ins to provide video, animation, or other special content. However, plug-ins can be exploited and may present a security or privacy risk. You can choose to use only certain plug-ins on trusted websites you select.

A dialog may appear when you visit a website that has plug-in content or when you change the blocking policy for a plug-in in the Websites pane of Safari preferences.

If plug-in content isn’t visible and the dialog asks: Would you like to use [plug-in name] on [website address]?

You have these choices:

  • Use Every Time: Safari uses the plug-in to show content for this website. The plug-in remains enabled for this website as long as you visit regularly.

  • Cancel: Safari won’t use the plug-in to show content on this website. To use the plug-in to show content for this website when you visit it again, choose View > Reload With Plug-Ins, or click and hold the Reload icon at the right end of the Smart Search field and choose Reload With Plug-Ins.

  • Use Once: Safari uses the plug-in to show content for this website now but not when you visit it again. To use the plug-in to show content for this website when you visit it again, choose View > Reload With Plug-Ins, or click and hold the Reload icon at the end of the Smart Search field and choose Reload With Plug-Ins.

Note: For all websites, Safari turns off the Adobe Flash Player plug-in by default.

If plug-in content is visible and the dialog asks: Do you want to trust the website [website address] to use the [plug-in name] plug-in?

You have these choices:

  • Trust: Safari uses the plug-in to show content for this website and doesn’t ask about this plug-in when you visit this website again.

  • Cancel: Safari shows a “[Plug-in] blocked for this website” placeholder instead of plug-in content on this website now and when you visit it again. To see plug-in content, click the placeholder, then click Trust.

If the plug-in content isn’t visible and the dialog asks: Do you want to trust the website [website address] to use the [plug-in name] plug-in?

You have these choices:

  • Never for this Website: Safari doesn’t let the website use the plug-in.

  • Trust: Safari lets the website use the plug-in and doesn’t ask about it when you visit this website again.

  • Not Now: Safari doesn’t let the website use the plug-in now, but asks about it again the next time you visit this website.

If the dialog asks: Are you sure you want to trust the website or all websites to run [plug-in name] in unsafe mode?

You have these choices:

  • Trust: Safari uses the plug-in in unsafe mode. The plug-in can access your personal data and documents.

  • Cancel: Safari doesn’t use the plug-in in unsafe mode. When a plug-in runs in unsafe mode, it can access your personal documents and data.

If the dialog says a plug-in needs updating

You have these choices:

  • Download [Plug-in]: Goes to a website where you can get an update. After downloading, install the update, then quit and reopen Safari.

  • Turn Off [Plug-in]: The plug-in is disabled, and Safari attempts to show the content without it. If that doesn’t work, a placeholder appears on this website until you update the plug-in.

If the dialog says your plug-in version has critical security issues

  • By default, Safari doesn’t let the website use the plug-in.

To use the plug-in anyway, choose Safari > Preferences, then click Websites. Select the plug-in on the left, click the pop-up menu for this website, then choose On. Doing this may present a security or privacy risk, so choose this option only for a website you trust.

To change the plug-in blocking policy for future visits to a website, choose Safari > Preferences, then click Websites. Select the website, then choose plug-in settings. See Change Websites preferences in Safari on Mac.
