How to transfer a child to another Family Sharing group

Children under 13 must be part of a Family Sharing group managed by a parent or guardian. You can transfer a child's Apple Account to another family group, or request to delete their Apple Account. If your child is over 13, you can also remove them from a family group.

If your child is under 13*, you can remove them from a Family Sharing group by transferring them to another group. Or a parent or guardian can request to delete their Apple Account, let the deletion take effect, then remove the child from the family group.

If your child is between the ages of 13-17 — and you set parental controls for their Apple Account — the family organizer must turn off the parental controls before the child can be removed from the family group, transferred to another family group, or request to leave the family group on their own.

How to transfer a child to another Family Sharing group

How to approve the request to transfer a child's Apple Account

If you're the child's current Family Sharing organizer, you should receive a notification after the organizer of the new Family Sharing group invites the child to join their family group. If the child uses Apple Card Family or Apple Cash Family, close the child's Apple Cash account and remove them from the shared Apple Card account. If you set up an Apple Watch for the child, use the Watch app on your iPhone or iPad to remove the device. The new Family Sharing organizer can set up the watch in their Family Sharing group later.

Delete a child's Apple Account

Children under 13 can't be removed from a Family Sharing group without being transferred to another family group, or having their Apple Account deleted by a parent or guardian. If a child in the family group is under 13, the family organizer needs to delete the child's Apple Account and let the deletion take effect before they can remove the child from the family group.

If your child is between 13-17, they can request deletion of their Apple Account, but it requires approval from a parent or guardian. The approval request is sent to the family organizer's primary Apple Account email address. When approving the request from this email, you'll go through the process of deleting the child's Apple Account.
