OS X Mavericks: Log out, sleep, and shut down
You can log out or put your Mac to sleep if you plan to return to work soon, or you can shut down your Mac completely.
You can use the power button as a shortcut:
Sleep: Press and release the power button.
Restart: Press and hold the power button for 1.5 seconds. In the sleep, restart, or shut down dialog, click Restart.
Shut down: Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Log out
To log out, choose Apple menu > Log Out. To skip the confirmation message, hold down the Command (⌘) key when you choose Log Out.
If your Mac is set up for multiple users, other users can log in now.
Sleep
To put your Mac to sleep, choose Apple menu > Sleep, or press and release the power button.
To wake your Mac, press the Space bar or click the mouse or trackpad.
For security, you can lock the screen during sleep or use a password-protected screen saver.
Shut down
- To shut the Mac off completely, choose Apple menu > Shut Down. To skip the confirmation message, hold down the Command (⌘) key when you choose Shut Down.
- If your Mac won’t shut down or you can’t open the Apple menu, hold down the power button for 5 seconds to force a shutdown.
The Mac is completely shut down when there is a black screen, no active power light, and no fan or drive noise.
Always shut down your Mac before opening the case to install additional memory or other devices inside the computer. You may also need to shut down before connecting or unplugging certain peripheral devices. If you are unsure, refer to the documentation that came with the device.
You don’t have to shut down your Mac when connecting or disconnecting USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, telephone, S-video, microphone, headphone, and Ethernet cables.
