LaserWriter Driver: System 6 & System 7 Environment

I have a mixed network of Macintosh computers using System 7 and System 6. I just purchased a LaserWriter Pro 630. Am I going to have network printing problems?

We suggest you use LaserWriter driver 7.2 in your mixed environment. The 7.2 driver added support for the LaserWriter Pro series.

A bug with PrintMonitor 7.1 and System 6 was found too late in the LaserWriter Pro series development to correct it before shipping. PrintMonitor's "Set Print Time" option will crash on systems prior to 7.0. PrintMonitor 7.1 was shipped with the LaserWriter Pro series, and will automatically install over the previous version. The Installer checks to see what version of system software (System 6 or System 7) is installed so that it places all the resources in their proper places.

LaserWriter driver 7.2 is compatible with PrintMonitor 7.0. Therefore after installing the LaserWriter Pro software, System 6 users need to downgrade to PrintMonitor 7.0. There is NO need to recommend that System 6 users upgrade to System 7 for their printing needs.

Apple recommends using the Installer disk when upgrading printer drivers. However, System 7 users can upgrade their systems by dragging the 7.2 driver to the System Folder. System 6 users can upgrade by dragging the LaserWriter driver, PrintMonitor, Backgrounder, and LaserPrep to their System Folder.

Early versions of the LaserWriter Drivers for System 7 were tested with all System 6 versions. Later LaserWriter Driver versions were only tested with System 6.0.8, and is the only System 6.x version now officially supported by Apple.
