Install fonts

When you use Font Book to install fonts on your computer, the fonts appear in the list of available fonts in your applications and in the Fonts window.

By default, Font Book places the fonts in the Fonts folder inside the Library folder in your home folder (~/Library/Fonts/). You can set Font Book preferences to install them elsewhere.

To view the Library folder (which is hidden by default) in your home folder, in the Finder choose Go > “Go to Folder” and then enter ~/Library/.

Set the font installation location

  1. Choose Font Book > Preferences, and then click General.
  2. Select an option from the Default Install Location pop-up menu.
    Option Description
User: Fonts are installed in ~/Library/Fonts/.
Computer: Fonts are installed in /Library/Fonts/. You must be a computer administrator to install fonts in this location.
A user-defined library: Fonts are installed into the selected user-defined library. Font libraries are visible in Font Book only to users who created them.

Install a font

  1. Insert the disc that contains the new font, or copy the font to your hard disk from another location.
  2. To validate a font before installing it, follow the instructions in:

  3. Do one of the following:
    • In the Finder, double-click the font’s icon, and then click Install Font.

    • In Font Book, click the Add button (+) below the Font column, navigate to and select the font, and then click Open.
